SYMPTOMS
========

When you try to monitor a remote computer running Windows NT Server and
Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
(DHCP) service, you are unable to configure Performance Monitor on your
local computer for WINS and DHCP counters.

This problem occurs if:

 - Your remote WINS server is a Compaq Proliant or Prosignia computer.
 - Your installed the Compaq Support Software Diskette (SSD) software
   version 1.15, including the Compaq hardware abstraction layer (HAL) for
   Windows NT on your remote Compaq computer

   NOTE: If you have the Compaq HAL installed, the following text appears
   in the Windows NT registry under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree under
   the \HARDWARE\RESOURCEMAP\Hardware Abstraction Layer subkey:

      Compaq Proliant and SystemPro MultiProcessor HAL

   NOTE: If the Microsoft HAL is installed the registry displays:

      SystemPro or compatible MP Hal

CAUSE
=====

Your Compaq computer runs the Compaq HAL causing Performance Monitor not to
display the counters correctly.

RESOLUTION
==========

Replace the Compaq HAL with the Microsoft HAL.
