 - Microsoft PowerPoint for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS
========

When double-clicking a PowerPoint presentation icon, you may receive a
message similar to the following:

   The application 'PowerPoint' could not be opened because an error
   of type -192 has occurred.

CAUSE
=====

This error occurs when the Desktop Database has become corrupted or the
document has lost its file type resource. If you have System 7.5.x, a
typical rebuild of the Desktop File usually will not repair the problem.

RESOLUTION
==========

Perform a clean rebuild of the System 7.5.x Desktop using the following
steps:

1. Disable all extensions and control panels except Macintosh Easy Open in
   the Extensions Manager control panel.

2. Restart the computer while holding down the OPTION and COMMAND keys.
   This brings up a dialog box that asks you if you are sure you want to
   rebuild the desktop file.

3. Click OK.

4. Once the desktop has been rebuilt, open the Extensions Manager control
   panel and turn all of the extensions and control panels back on.

5. Restart the computer and start PowerPoint.

6. Open the file (the presentation that originally resulted in the error
   message) by clicking Open on the File menu, and then click Save on the
   File menu to resave the file and reinstate the correct resource
   information.

7. Quit PowerPoint.

8. Double-click the file. PowerPoint should now start.
