The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Bob version 1.0
-------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY
=========

You are unable to log into Bob as a new user or are unable to complete
a Mail run due to incorrect versions of Mapiu.dll and Mapix.dll.

SYMPTOMS
========

When you try to start Bob as a new user, you receive the following error
message:

Your program is making an invalid dynamic link call to a dll.

This message usually occurs in the Household Information screen when you
click Next.

Or, if you try to go start Bob E-Mail, you receive the following error
message:

An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway,
click ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this
program, click close. You will lose information you entered since
   your last save.

At this point, you should click Close and resolve the problem.

RESOLUTION
==========

These messages could be caused by missing or corrupt files required by
Microsoft Bob. Make sure that the files, Mapiu.dll and Mapix.dll,
located in the System folder of Windows are the correct sizes.

File Size
---- ----

Mapiu.dll 239,104 bytes

Mapix.dll 430,080 bytes

To check the file sizes, do the following:

1. Click the Start button, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

2. Make sure that the Name And Location tab is selected.

3. In the Named field, type the following:

       mapi*.dll.

4. In the Look In field, type the following

      c

Where C is the letter of the hard drive where you installed Windows.

5. Make sure that the Include Subfolders box contains a check mark.

6. Click Find Now.

7. Scroll through the list of files to find Mapiu.dll and Mapix.dll.

8. With your right mouse button, click one the files, and then click
Properties. Compare the file size to the example in the "Resolution"
   section of this article.

9. Repeat step 8 for the other file.

If the file sizes are incorrect you need to close all programs,
rename both files, and then extract new files form your original Bob disks
or compact disc.

Extracting New Files
--------------------

NOTE: The following steps assume:

 - your floppy drive is drive A.

 - Your hard drive is drive C.

 - Your CD-ROM drive is drive D.

Compact Disc
------------

To extract the files from the Bob compact disc, do the following:

From an MS-DOS prompt enter the following commands and press ENTER after
each line.

   extract d:\u1.cab mapix.dll /l c:\windows\system

   extract d:\u1.cab mapiu.dll /l c:\windows\system

Floppy Disks
------------

To extract the files from the Bob floppy disks, do the following:

1. Insert Disk 3 in your floppy drive.

2. From an MS-DOS prompt enter the following commands and press ENTER after
   each line.

      extract a:\u3.cab mapix.dll /l c:\windows\system

      extract a:\u3.cab mapiu.dll /l c:\windows\system

If you still receive the error, then check your hard drive to see that the
following list of .dll files installed by Bob are the correct size. If any
of the file sizes are incorrect, rename the files and then use the steps in
the "Extracting New Files" section of this article to extract new files
from your Bob setup disks. These files will be in your windows\system
folder. The file date should be 1/30/95 or later; if any of these files
have a date before 1/30/95, rename the file and the replace with the file
from your original installation disk.
