The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.1
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

Fields in the header or footer used in a print merge in Microsoft Word for
the Macintosh, version 5.1, are not converted to fields in later versions
of Microsoft Word. Instead, the fields remain in the header but
are not converted to fields (they still have the chevrons around them).

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs only if there are no other fields used in the body
of the document. If you use a data field or any other field (listed later
in this article) in the body of the document, all fields in the header are
converted correctly.

WORKAROUND
==========

To work around this problem, convert the chevron items into fields. To do
this, follow these steps:

1. In Word, click Header and Footer on the View menu.

2. On the Edit menu, click Select All. (This selects everything in the
   header.)

3. On the Edit menu, click Cut.

4. Close the Header.

5. Paste the Clipboard's contents into the document by clicking Paste
   on the Edit menu.

6. On the File menu, click Close. When prompted to save the changes,
   click Yes. When the Save Format dialog box prompts you to save this
   document in Word 5.x format or Word format, click Word 5.x format. If
   you have already saved this document as a Word document, click
   Save As on the File menu and change the File Type to Word 5.1 for the
   Macintosh.

7. Reopen the document.

8. The fields are now converted correctly; you can select, cut, and
   paste them into the Header.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in versions of Word listed
earlier in this article.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Microsoft Word 5.x for the Macintosh does not support fields; therefore,
to achieve the same effect as the ASK and SET fields, use the print merge
fields ASK and SET.

The following list contains the merge fields available in Word 5.x that
are
affected by the symptoms described earlier in this article:

   IF...ENDIF
   ASK
   SET
   INCLUDE
   NEXT
   DATA
   Calculations
