The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for the Power Macintosh, version 4.0
----------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY
=======

When you bring a bitmapped picture into Microsoft PowerPoint for the Power
Macintosh, version 4.0, and attempt to recolor it, you may receive a
message similar to one of the following:

   Sorry, you cannot recolor a 24-bit color picture.

    -or-

   This object is a bitmap. To recolor you must use an image editing
   program.

It does not matter what color depth the picture really is.

CAUSE
=====

PowerPoint for the PowerMacintosh does not allow you to recolor bitmap
graphics; however, it does allow you to recolor vector-based graphics.

WORKAROUND
==========

Method 1: Use PowerPoint 3.0 to Recolor the Graphic
---------------------------------------------------

Recolor the graphic in PowerPoint 3.0 before you paste it in the Power
Macintosh version of PowerPoint. To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the Edit menu, click Insert, and then click Picture.

2. Click the picture you want to import and click OK.

3. Select the picture if it is not already selected and then click Recolor
   Picture on the Object menu.

4. Make the changes you want and then click OK.

5. On the Edit menu, click Copy.

6. Switch to or start a Power Macintosh version PowerPoint.

7. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

Method 2: Install the 68K version of PowerPoint 4.0
---------------------------------------------------

If you have the 680x00 version of PowerPoint 4.0 you can install this
version and use it to recolor bitmaps.

NOTE: These steps assume you have the Power Macintosh version of PowerPoint
4.0 already installed on machine.

1. Insert Disk 1 of your original PowerPoint Setup disks.

2. Drag the Microsoft PowerPoint Setup Table document from Install Disk 1
   and drop it on the Microsoft Setup Application (also on Disk 1). This
   starts a new installation as opposed to a maintenance mode installation.

3. Click Complete/Custom or Typical installation.

4. The next dialog box asks whether you want the 68K or Power Macintosh
   version of PowerPoint. Choose the 68K version.

   After installation completes, you can recolor bitmapped pictures in
   PowerPoint 4.0.
