SYMPTOMS
========
 
When you attempt to connect to an online service in Microsoft Money, Money may
not call your financial institution, and you may receive one of the following
error messages:
 
Money 99:
 
   An unexpected error has occurred. Please try your call again, and if this
   message repeats, call Online Services Customer Support.
 
Money 98 and Money 5.0:
 
   There was an unexpected error communicating with Online Services. Please try
   your call again.
 
Money 4.0:
 
   There was a problem with the file being received from Online Services. Please
   call Online Services Customer Support.
 
NOTE: If Money connects to your financial institution and then you receive one of
these error messages, please see the following article in the Microsoft

CAUSE
=====
 
This behavior can occur if the Online Services feature in Microsoft Money is
configured to use a Direct Cable Connection instead of a Dial-up Networking
connection.
 
RESOLUTION
==========
 
To resolve this issue:
 
1. Go to the Online Services or Home Banking area in Money. To do this, use the
   appropriate method for your version of Money.
 
   Money 99:
 
   a. On the Money navigation bar, click Online.
 
   b. In the list of accounts, click an account that is enabled for Online
      Services, and then click Go To.
 
   c. In the left pane, click Connect.
 
   Money 98, Money 5.0:
 
   a. Go to the Home Banking area.
 
   b. Click the Connect tab.
 
   Money 4.0:
 
   a. On the Money startup screen, click Online Services.
 
2. Click Call, Connect, Get Statements, or Send Payments. If you are prompted to
   change your online personal identification number (PIN), do so, and then
   click OK.
 
3. In the Modem box, click to select your modem.
 
   NOTE: Do not click Parallell Cable or Serial Cable.
 
4. If you did not change your PIN in step 2, type your PIN, and then click
   Connect.
 
If the issue continues to occur, remove the Direct Cable Connection component in
Microsoft Windows. To do this:
 
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
 
2. Double-click System.
 
3. Click the Device Manager tab.
 
4. Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Modems to expand the branch.
 
5. Under Modems, click the first Serial Cable or Parallel Cable device, click
   Remove, and then click OK.
 
   Repeat this step to remove all Serial Cable and Parallell Cable devices.
 
6. Click Close.

Direct Cable Connection is a component of the Dial-Up Networking feature in
Microsoft Windows 95 or later and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or later. You can use
Direct Cable Connection to share information between two computers over a
parallel or serial cable.
