SYMPTOMS
========

When a projection system is used to display a slide show, the text and
images may appear jagged.

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs because PowerPoint does not support anti-aliasing
(that is, a smoothing effect attained by dithering certain colors
together).

WORKAROUND
==========

You can convert PowerPoint slides to anti-aliased PICT files by using a
third-party graphics program. To convert PowerPoint slides to anti-aliased
PICT images using Adobe Photoshop, use the following steps:

1. In Slide Sorter view, click once on the slide you want to convert, and
   then click Copy on the Edit menu.

2. Start Photoshop, and Click New the File menu in Photoshop.

3. In the New dialog box, click OK.

4. On the Edit menu, click Paste.

5. On the Image menu, click Image Size. In the New Size: Width area, type
   the width of the screen the Slide Show is to be played on in pixels.
   For example, select Pixels from the drop-down list and type 640 if you
   are using a 640 x 480 pixel screen to display your Slide Show.

   For this step to work in Photoshop 2.0, make sure that neither of the
   Constrain boxes (Proportions and File Size) are selected.

6. In the New Size: Height area, type the height of the screen in
   pixels, and in the Resolution text area, type 72, and click OK.

7. Click All on the Select menu, and then click Copy on the Edit menu.

8. In PowerPoint, view the slide on which you want to place the anti-
   aliased PICT, and click Paste on the Edit menu.

9. Resize the newly pasted graphic so that it takes up the entire slide
   area.

The image should now appear with anti-aliasing when viewed in Slide
Show.

Note that you can use other image-editing programs to do this; these
editing programs should have similar commands to those in Photoshop.

When PowerPoint slides are copied into most third-party graphics
applications, they are brought in at 576 dots per inch. When you reduce
the size and resolution, the graphics program will anti-alias the image.

Photoshop is manufactured by Adobe Systems, Inc., a vendor independent of
Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this
product's performance or reliability.
