SYMPTOMS
========

In Money version 4.0, when you attempt to rename an investment,
you receive the following error message:

   This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut
   down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

You must then close Money and restart it. When you open the file, the
investment will have been renamed. You may receive a message indicating
possible data loss.

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs when you have an investment that has a zero
quantity balance and a symbol different than the stock name, and
you try to rename it to the name of another investment with a zero
quantity balance.

NOTE: A zero quantity balance means that no shares in the investment
are currently owned. This can happen if the investment was completely
sold, or if it was never purchased but was added to the investment
portfolio.

This problem may occur only when the following conditions are true:

 - An investment has been owned in the past, but was later sold.

 - An investment is deleted from the Investment Portfolio.

   NOTE: You can delete an investment only when zero shares of that
   investment are owned.

 - That same investment is renamed to the name of another existing
   investment of the same type. For example, stock One is renamed to
   stock Two.

   -and-

 - There is a symbol for the deleted investment that is different from
   the name of the security.

WORKAROUND
==========

To work around this problem, avoid any attempt to rename an investment
if the conditions discussed in the Cause section of this article apply
to that investment.

MORE INFORMATION
================

After an investment has been deleted from the Investment Portfolio, you
can rename the investment only by accessing the Details for that
investment from outside the Investment Portfolio. To access the
Investment Details screen, use the right mouse button to click either
of the following, and then click Details:

 - A transaction for the investment in an account register

   -or-

 - A line for the investment in a report.

This problem has been resolved in Money 5.0 for Windows 95
