SYMPTOMS
========

When installing Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, you may encounter the
following error message:

   Error, Setup cannot write to WIN.INI [section] {string}

NOTE: [section] refers to a section heading in the Win.ini file, and
{string} refers to a string value in that section.

You may also see additional error messages:

   Error, Cannot write to the *.ini file

   Error, Setup cannot write to GRAPH5.INI

   ACMESETUP.EXE caused a General Protection Fault in SHELL.DLL

CAUSE
=====

This problem is caused by an invalid line in the Win.ini file. When Setup
attempts to add lines to the Win.ini file, it encounters these invalid
lines, and cannot add the lines required by PowerPoint to run.

RESOLUTION
==========

You must remove all lines from the Win.ini file that are not essential for
Windows to run, and then run PowerPoint Setup:

1. Make a backup copy of your Win.ini file.

2. Open your Win.ini file in Notepad. On the Search menu, click Find. Type
   "[embedding]" without the quotation marks, and click Find Next.

3. Move to the next section of the Win.ini file, and then select all lines
   from that point to the end of the file. Cut those lines, and paste them
   in a new file. Save that file as Backup.txt.

4. Delete the following line from the graph5.ini:

   [Microsoft Graph]
   Options5=27

5. Run PowerPoint Setup.

6. Once Setup completes, open Backup.txt, copy all of its contents, and
   then paste them to the end of the Win.ini file.

7. Save the Win.ini file.
