 - Opening message indicating the file needs repair

 - Improper Behavior

MORE INFORMATION
================

Illegal Operation Error (IOE), General Protection
-------------------------------------------------
Faults (GPF) or Unrecoverable Application Error (UAE)
-----------------------------------------------------

You are most likely to receive the UAE, GPF, and IOE messages when you
attempt to open the file.

IOEs can occur in all Money versions running under Windows 95/98.

GPFs can occur in Money versions running under Windows 3.1x.

UAEs can occur in Money versions running under Windows 3.0.

Opening Message Indicating the File Needs Repair
------------------------------------------------

When you start Money, you may see a message stating that the Money
file is being repaired.

In Money versions 4.0 and 5.0, you receive the following message:

Do you want Money to repair the file <file name> before opening it?
When you exit Money, the file needs to be closed properly. If your
machine was turned off, or there was a problem while Money was
running, Money needs to make minor repairs to the file. Always be
sure to exit Money before turning off your computer. If you click
No, you'll need to open a different Money file.

In Money versions 1.0, 2.0, 2.0a, 3.0, you receive the following
message:

Microsoft Money needs to make some minor repairs to this file before
opening, or you can open another file. Would you like to repair this
   file?

The "file repair" routine is invoked any time Money finds that its data
file (*.mny) has not been closed properly (for example, if you perform
a system reset with Money open). When the program opens the data file, it
looks for inconsistencies. If Money finds any inconsistencies, the
routine rebuilds almost all of the indexes of the file.

Improper Behavior
-----------------

Improper behavior may be caused by factors external to Money. There are
many reasons a file may become corrupted or cause Money to behave
improperly, including:

 - Memory-resident programs that cause incorrect data storage in either
memory or disk, or both memory and disk

 - Incompatible disk-partitioning programs

 - Corrupted Money installation or corrupted Money disks (Note that
this is probably not an issue if all other files load correctly in
   Money.)

 - A virus

 - An improper exit from Money

 - An improper exit from Windows

 - Hard disk errors

To repair a Microsoft Money file, try the following options:

 - Archive the file.

 - Export and import accounts to a new or existing file.

 - Upgrade to Money 4.0 or later.

To Archive a File
-----------------

NOTE: This option should not be used with Money 1.0.

1. On the File menu, click Archive.

2. In the Archive dialog box, type today's date in the "Remove
transactions from the current file that are dated before" box, and then
   click OK.

Money makes a complete copy of your existing file and then prompts
   you to name this file.

3. Change the default file name (the default is 199<x>.mny, depending
on the current date) to a more specific name. We suggest
   Testarch.mny for the file name.

4. Money then goes through each account and displays options for
removing the transactions that fall before today's date. In all
instances, click Don't Remove Any Transactions.
in the buffer until the file is closed.

To Export And Import Accounts
-----------------------------

NOTE: If you have several accounts, you may want to print a Net Worth
Report first to use as a reference for marking off each account as you
export it. For more information about how to perform this task in
Money, see your Money printed documentation or online Help.

Use the appropriate methods for your version of Money.

Exporting from Money 3.0 and Later:

To export accounts from Money 3.0 or later, follow these steps:

4. In the Export dialog box, select the format if prompted, and then type
the File Name. Give the file a name similar to the name of the account
you are exporting. For example, if you are exporting the Checking
account, you might want to name the file Checking. Then, click OK.

5. When asked what type of account to export, click Regular or click
Investment, depending on what type of account you are exporting, and
   then click OK.

6. Click the account from the Account List that you want to export, and
   then click Continue.

7. When Money notifies you that the export is complete, click OK.

   Checking.

6. Click OK.

7. Click the name of the account to export, and then click Continue.

8. When Money notifies you that the export is complete, click OK.

Importing into Money 3.0 and Later:

To import accounts into Money 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 98, and 99, follow these
steps:

1. On the File menu, click New to create a new .mny file.

2. Type a file name, and then click OK.

NOTE: In Money 3.0 select the type of categories you want, and click

accounts, enter zero for all opening account balances.

6. On the File menu, click Import. Then, select the exported .qif
   file(s) and click Import.

NOTE: It is important that you import all exported .qif files at the
same time so that your transfer transactions import properly. You
can delete unwanted accounts later. To select multiple files, press
and hold down CTRL while you click files. If you are running
Money on Windows NT, or if you are using Money 3.0, you can
   click Select All.

7. In the Select Import dialog box, match the specified .qif file with
   the appropriate account. Click OK.

NOTE: Read each Import dialog box carefully. These dialog boxes tell
you what information you are importing, and where you are assigning
   the information in Money.

8. Continue to associate the appropriate import files with the
   appropriate accounts.

If you cannot open the file in Money and the file originally came from
Quicken, export that file once again from Quicken and try importing it
into Money.

Importing into Money 1.0 and 2.0:

To import accounts into Money 1.0 or Money 2.0, follow these steps:

1. On the File menu, click New to create a new .mny file.

accounts, enter zero for all opening account balances.

7. On the File menu, click Import.

8. Select the file to be imported, and then click OK.

9. Select the Microsoft Money account to which the imported
transactions will be added. Repeat steps 7-9 to import all exported
   accounts.

Upgrading to Money 4.0 or Later
-------------------------------

Money 4.0, 5.0, 98 and 99 have improved file repair abilities. When you
open a file from an earlier version of Money, the program automatically
builds a new file from information in the old file. During this process,
if there are problems with the old file, Money will attempt to resolve
them at this time. This may correct any problems experienced with the
old file. As is the case with the other options in this article, this
is not a guaranteed resolution.

NOTE: Earlier versions of Money are unable to read the new file created
by later versions of Money.
