The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Money version 5.0 for Windows 95
 - Microsoft Money versions 4.0 and 4.0a, for Windows 95
-------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you attempt to install Microsoft Money from compact disc, you receive
an error message similar to any of the following:

   Insufficient memory to run application

   -or-

ACMSETUP caused an invalid page fault in module MSSETUP.DLL

   -or-

BOOTSTRAP performed an illegal operation in module LZEXPAND.DLL

   -or-

System Error: Windows cannot read from drive D:

   -or-

ACMSETUP caused an exception C000006H in module MSSETUP.DLL

CAUSE
=====

These errors may occur if the CD-ROM drive is unable to access all files
and folders on the compact disc. One possible cause is a smudged or
scratched compact disc. Other possible causes for these errors include
improperly configured or outdated CD-ROM drivers, hardware problems, or
hardware conflicts.

RESOLUTION
==========

To determine if there are problems with the Money compact disc, or if the
CD-ROM drive is not working properly, perform the following tests.

Inspect and Clean the Compact Disc
----------------------------------

To verify that the compact disc is clean and free of scratches, inspect the
silver side of the disc. Clean the disc by wiping it with a soft cloth in a
straight line, starting from the center of the disc and working your way
out toward the edge. Please note that light or fine scratches should
present no problems.

If there is no apparent physical damage, and if the errors still occur
after you clean the compact disc, use the steps in the following sections
to test the CD-ROM drive for proper operation.

NOTE: The following steps assume that your CD-ROM drive is drive D. Please
modify the instructions if your drive is designated with a different
letter.

Test Your CD-ROM Drive Copy Ability
-----------------------------------

1. On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.

2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type each of the following commands, and press the
ENTER key at the end of each line:

   Money version 4.0

      copy d:\money4.1
      copy d:\mmcat\dibs5c\wofpopd.dib

   Money version 5.0

      Copy d:\money96.1

If you receive an error message similar to the following

      CDR101: Not Ready

it indicates that the CD-ROM drive cannot read the compact disc. This
problem will probably not be resolved by replacing the Money compact
   disc.

3. To confirm your findings, repeat steps 1 and 2 above on another computer
system, such as a neighbor's or at a system at the computer store where
   you purchased Microsoft Money.

If the test fails on another computer, the Money compact disc is probably
faulty. Return the compact disc to the place of purchase for an exchange.

If the test works properly on another computer, it proves that the disc
is good, and that your CD-ROM drive is having a problem. Please contact
your hardware vendor for more information and further testing of the CD-
   ROM drive and its configuration.

Test Copy Integrity
-------------------

After you complete the test described above, if the files copy without
errors, test the integrity of the file that has been copied from your CD-
ROM drive to your hard disk by using the MS-DOS File Compare program
(Fc.exe). This test can be used to determine if the CD-ROM subsystem is
functioning properly at the device driver and hardware levels.

The Fc.exe utility is a useful method for testing problems related to
general protection (GP) faults or other critical errors (such as read
errors or out of memory messages) that may occur when you run a CD-ROM
program.

To test the copied files, use the Fc.exe with the /B (binary) switch.
For example, to compare the Money4.1 file on your compact disc with the
Money4.1 file on your hard disk, type the following at the MS-DOS
command prompt, and press the ENTER key at the end of each line:

Money version 4.0

   fc /b money4.1 d:\money4.1
   fc /b wofpopd.dib d:\mmcat\dibs5c\wofpopd.dib

Money version 5.0

   fc /b money96.1 d:\money96.1

If you receive the message "No differences encountered," the Money files
were copied perfectly from your CD-ROM drive to your hard disk. If you
receive strange-looking information, the files did not copy perfectly from
the CD-ROM drive, resulting in corrupted Money files on your hard disk.
Please contact your hardware vendor for further testing of the CD-ROM drive
and its configuration.

Clean Up
--------

Finally, to clean up your hard disk after you have tested your CD-ROM drive
copy ability by using the steps above, type each of the following commands
at the MS-DOS command prompt, and press ENTER at the end of each line:

Money version 4.0

   del money4.1
   del wofpopd.dib
   exit

Money version 5.0

   del money96.1
   exit
