SUMMARY
=======

This article describes the four different types of file transfer protocols
available in the Works 4.0 Communications module.

MORE INFORMATION
================

MS Text
-------

This protocol is used to transfer ordinary text files such as word
processing documents. This protocol is fast and simple to use. However,
this protocol does not deal well with phone line disturbances and can cause
words to become lost or garbled if there is line noise. The other protocols
deal with these disturbances more effectively.

MS X/Y Modem
------------

This is a widely used protocol with error-checking capabilities. There are
five different variations of this tool available in Works. These variations
are available in the Method box after you select the X/Y Modem protocol.
The variations are listed below:

   Variation Description
   -------------------------------------------------------------
Xmodem This method transfers only the data fork of
a file. It uses 128K blocks and basic error
                checking.

XModem CRC This method uses 128K blocks with improved
                error checking.

XModem 1k This method is faster than CRC with the same
                error checking.

Ymodem This method is slightly faster than Xmodem.
It is best used when you are unsure of the other
                computer's abilities.

Ymodem-g This is the fastest option, but does not work
well if there is a lot of line noise.

MS Kermit
---------

This is another widely used protocol. Kermit allows for either 7 or 8 data
bits. Some computers cannot handle the 8th bit required by other protocols.
Because Kermit can use 7 data bits it can connect to these computers. The
Sliding Windows method in the Kermit protocol allows it to send continuous
streams of data while receiving responses at the same time. This allows for
faster data transfer.

MS Zmodem
---------

This is the newest protocol. It is designed to be faster and more efficient
than YModem-g. MS ZModem provides the following two protocol variations:

   Variation Description
   --------------------------------------------------------
Full Streaming This is the fastest and the most common
ZModem method. It is best used when you
are unsure of the other computer's
                    abilities.

Window This is the slowest ZModem method. It
should be used when the other computer
                    does not support Full Streaming.
