SYMPTOMS
========

Documents previously created and saved in Microsoft Word for the Macintosh
do not respond to changes in the Always Make Backup preference setting.

CAUSE
=====

The setting to activate the creation of backup copies is actually contained
in each individual file. The control for this setting, Make Backup, is
located in the Save File As dialog box. A document's backup setting is
determined from Word's Always Make Backup preference setting only when it
is first created and saved.

RESOLUTION
==========

To change the backup status of any Word for the Macintosh document, use the
following steps:

1. Open the document.

2. On the File menu, click File Save As.

3. Select the Make Backup check box if you want the document to create a
   backup copy each time it's saved, or clear the Make Backup check box if
   you don't want a backup file to be created.

4. Click the Save button.

5. Click the Replace button.
