SYMPTOMS
========

After you install a U.S. Robotics Courier I-Modem, you may not be able
to connect to MSN, The Microsoft Network.

CAUSE
=====

Some internal U.S. Robotics Courier I-Modems do not have firmware that
supports synchronous PPP, which is required for an ISDN modem to connect
to MSN. The earliest version of the firmware that supports synchronous
PPP is version 1.0.9. To determine the firmware version for an internal
I-Modem, issue the AT command "ATI7" (without quotation marks). Both the
Supervisor Rev and DSP Rev lines should show at least 1.0.9.

Both internal and external U.S. Robotics Courier I-Modems must have
synchronous PPP enabled.

RESOLUTION
==========

If you have a firmware version earlier than version 1.0.9, contact U.S.
Robotics for a firmware update.

Also, make sure that synchronous PPP is enabled using one of the following
methods:

 - In the Courier I-Modem Manager software, select Internet Access as
   the default call type.

 - Issue the AT command "AT*V2=5" (without quotation marks) to enable
   synchronous PPP, followed by "ATZ!" (without quotation marks) to
   permanently store the settings to non-volatile RAM on the I-Modem.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Your I-Modem may connect to other online services, because the I-Modem
supports the V.120 protocol. However, MSN does not support this protocol
and requires that the ISDN adapter support synchronous PPP.
