The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c
 - Microsoft PowerPoint for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 4.0
----------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you open a PowerPoint for the Macintosh file in PowerPoint for
Windows, the graphic may be displayed as a box with an "X" in it or you may
see the following message:

   Sorry, no pictures were converted. The picture converter was not
   found.

CAUSE
=====

This problem may occur for either of the following reasons:

 - The PICT import filter on the Windows computer is either not installed
   or has been damaged or deleted.

   -or-

 - You are running PowerPoint from a network and the network drives have
   been re-mapped.

RESOLUTION
==========

To work around this problem, use the method appropriate to your situation:

Method 1: If the PICT import filter is not installed, is damaged, or has
          been removed, use the following steps:

          a. Run Setup from the PowerPoint Setup disks.

             Setup will be started in maintenance mode.

          b. Select the Add/Remove option.

          c. In the Filter section, select (put a check mark in) the PICT
             Import Filter check box, and continue running the Setup
             program until the filter is installed.

          NOTE: If the PICT Import Filter check box is already selected,
          the filter may be damaged or may have been deleted from your
          computer. If this is the case, clear the check box to remove the
          damaged or deleted filter (even if the filter has been deleted
          you must use this method so that the System files will be
          updated), and continue with the Setup program. Once you've
          removed the filter, run Setup again, and follow steps a-c to
          install a "clean" version of the filter.

Method 2: If the problem is occurring because a network drive has been
          remapped (Windows only):

          a. In a text editor, such as Windows Notepad, open the Win.ini
             file.

          b. In the Win.ini file, locate the following line:

                [MS Graphic Import filters]

          c. Find the following line

             Macintosh PICT(.PCT)=C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS\GRPHFLT\PICTIMP.FLT,PCT

             and modify the path to point to the new drive location.

STATUS
======

This problem does not occur in PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0.

MORE INFORMATION
================

This problem occurs only when you convert a PowerPoint for the Macintosh
file to a PowerPoint for Windows file. Objects created with PowerPoint
tools use the same format on both platforms. However, any object that was
not created by a PowerPoint tool needs to go through the PICT import
filter. If the PICT import filter is unavailable, a PICT object will be
displayed as an "X."
