SYMPTOMS
========

When a large site is configured to inventory and collect files, these files
eventually end up in the FILES.COL directory. When the site server
inventories itself, it has no way to distinguish the files in this
directory and collects them again, creating *extremely* large MIF files.

These MIFs cause the SMS Executive service to spend hours processing them,
backlogging everything else. Additionally, these duplicate MIFs collected
by the server end up in the FILES.COl directory magnifying the problem by
two each time the server does its own inventory.

RESOLUTION
==========

There are three workarounds that can be currently done to resolve this
issue:

 - Do not collect files.

 - Manually delete collected files often enough to keep the number low.

 - Disable the inventory agent service on the Site Server.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Systems Management Server
version 1.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information
in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
