The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS
========
 
When you start Bob, or when a sound plays in Bob, you observe one of
the following symptoms:
 
 - Stuttering sounds
 - General protection (GP) faults
 - Static
 - No sound
 - Computer stops responding (hangs)
 - System abruptly exits Windows and returns to MS-DOS
 - A "No ROM Basic" error message occurs when you start applications
 - Memory parity error
 - Incorrect playback speed. For example, sounds play double speed
 - EMM Exception error #6
 
CAUSE
=====
 
A common cause for these problems is incorrect sound card settings for your
particular computer and sound card combination.
 
RESOLUTION
==========
 
You can usually end the problems by changing your sound card setting as
recommended by the hardware vendor. For more information about sound card
settings, please query the Microsoft Knowledge Base using the brand of your
sound card AND the following keywords:
 
   homemm dma
 
For example, if you are using an Ensoniq sound card, you would use the
following query in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
 
   Ensoniq homemm dma

To determine if the sound card is causing your problems, you need to
disable the sound driver, restart Windows, and try Bob again. Bob will run
without sound. If the error message, crashing or "hanging" stops, the
problem is related to your sound card settings.
 
To temporarily turn off your sound, use the instructions below for your
version of Windows:
 
Windows 95
----------
 
1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
 
2. Double-click System
 
3. Click the Device Manager tab.
 
4. Double-click Sound, Video, And Game Controllers.
 
5. Double-click your sound card.
 
   NOTE: If your sound card is not listed, follow the steps in the
   section below titled "Windows 95 with Windows 3.x Drivers."
 
6. Remove the check mark from the Device Usage configuration box (usually
   called Original Configuration).
 
7. Click OK
 
8. Restart Windows and test Bob.
 
9. To return to your original sound configuration, follow steps 1-8, above.
   Then, select your original configuration.
 
Windows 95 with Windows 3.x drivers
-----------------------------------
 
1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and click Control
   Panel.
 
2. Double-click Multimedia, then click the Advanced tab.
 
3. Double-click Audio Devices.
 
4. Double-click your sound card.
 
5. Select Do Not Use Audio Features On This Device.
 
7. Click OK, then click OK again.
 
8. Restart Windows and test Bob. To return to your original sound card,
   configuration, Follow the steps above.
 
Steps for Windows 3.x
---------------------
 
 1. On the File menu in Program Manager, click Run.
 
 2. Type the following in the command line box, and then click OK:
 
       system.ini
 
 3. Notepad starts with the System.ini file displayed.
 
 4. On the Search menu, click Find.
 
 5. Type the following in the Find What box, and then press ENTER:
 
       wave=
 
 6. Click Cancel. The wave= line should be selected.
 
 7. Type a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the wave= line. For
    example, the line should look like the following:
 
       ;wave=mmsystem.dll
 
 8. Press the F3 key to search for any additional wave= lines. If any of
    these lines are found, type a semicolon at the beginning of these
    lines.
 
 9. Repeat steps 5-8 for the wave1= and wave2= lines. Type a semicolon at
    the beginning of these lines, if any are found.
 
10. Close Notepad, saving the editing changes you just made.
 
11. Restart Windows and test Bob. No sounds should be heard in
    Windows or in Bob. To restore your original sound configuration, follow
    steps 1-10, above and reverse the changes you made.
