Testing Your CD-ROM Drive
-------------------------

The CD-ROM drive may have difficulty reading files located on the
outer portion, or track, of the compact disc. To test for specific drive-
capacity limitations, do the following:

1. Insert the Encarta 1994 compact disc into the CD-ROM drive.

2. Open the Encarta 1994 disc.

3. Open the Encarta Files Folder.

4. Drag the following file to your hard drive icon.

      Atlasmdoc

5. Open the MIDI Folder.

6. Drag the following file to your hard drive icon.

      T049238b

7. Close the MIDI Folder and open the Animations Folder.

8. Drag the following files to your hard drive icon.

      T047517a
      T045001a

If the following error message appears while you copy either file, then
your CD-ROM drive cannot read the disc at the specified location:

The file <file name> couldn't be read, because a disk error occurred.
Do you want to continue copying?

where <file name> is the name of the file you are copying.

If the file does copy, compare its size with the file on the disc. To
compare file size information, do the following:

1. Locate the file on the disc.

2. Click the file one time.

3. On the File Menu, click Get Info.

4. On the line displaying the Size, make note of the number of bytes
   used.

5. Repeat steps 1-4 with the file that was copied to the hard drive.

The files should use an identical number of bytes. If the number of bytes
is different, that means the CD-ROM drive is having problems reading the
disc.

For additional information, contact your CD-ROM drive manufacturer.
