SYMPTOMS
========

Installation of a new Microsoft Exchange Server into an existing Site that
already has a large number of Microsoft Exchange Servers installed (around
50-80) can take a very long time to complete.

CAUSE
=====

The Microsoft Exchange Setup program is trying to replicate the new
Microsoft Exchange Server's Directory with all of the other Microsoft
Exchange Servers in the Site.

WORKAROUND
==========

Tell the Microsoft Exchange Setup program to replicate the new Microsoft
Exchange Server's Directory only with the Microsoft Exchange Server
specified in the Join an Existing Site dialogue. Then, after the Microsoft
Exchange Setup program is finished, the Microsoft Exchange Knowledge
Consistency Checker (KCC) will take care of informing the new Microsoft
Exchange Server of the other Microsoft Exchange Servers in the Site.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange version
4.0. This problem was corrected in the latest Microsoft Exchange Server
U.S. Service Pack. For information on obtaining the Service Pack, query on
the following word in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (without the spaces):
