------------------------------------------------
1. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS FOR RUNNING CINEMANIA '95
------------------------------------------------

To install and run Cinemania '95 you need:

 - Any Apple Macintosh computer that supports a 256-color,
640x480 resolution (13-inch) or higher resolution monitor
 - System 7.0 or later
 - 4MB of random-access memory (RAM) (5-8MB strongly recommended)
 - 4MB of available hard disk space
 - CD-ROM drive

In order to use Cinemania '95, you must install the Cinemania
application on your hard disk. The installer program on the CD-ROM
copies the Cinemania program to a new folder on your hard disk. In
addition, it adds any necessary files and resources, such as QuickTime
2.0, to your System Folder.

NOTE: The installation process may require more than 4MB of hard drive
space on machines running System 7.0 or 7.0.1. This space is required
only during installation-once you restart, Cinemania '95 will occupy
only 4MB on your hard drive. Under System 7 or 7.0.1, the installation
program must make a copy of your System file in order to install the
fonts required for Cinemania '95. The extra copy of the System file is
removed when you restart your computer. If you encounter this problem,
see the section on Manual installation.

-------------
2. MEMORY USE
-------------

 - How can I get the best performance from Cinemania '95 on my
   machine?

Cinemania is designed to work best with the most common multimedia
Macintosh computers being sold today. These machines have 5 to 8MB of
memory, a double-speed CD-ROM drive, a 13-inch monitor, and can
display thousands of colors. However, there are many machines with 4MB
of RAM that can display only 256 colors. There are also many machines
with 16 or 32MB of RAM, 16-inch monitors that can display millions of
colors. The following sections show how you an get the most from
Cinemania with your computer's configuration.

If you have 4 to 5MB of memory
------------------------------
Typical system:
   Macintosh LCIII
   4MB of RAM
   13-inch monitor
   256 colors

Most computers will not have trouble running Cinemania with 4MB of
RAM. However, if your system has a lot of extensions, fonts, screen
savers, etc., there may not be enough memory left over for Cinemania
to run properly.

To see how much memory your system software is using, return to the
desktop, select the Apple menu at the left side of the menu bar, and
choose the first menu item, "About This Macintosh...." The largest
unused block needs to be greater than 2048K to run Cinemania '95. If
the only item listed in the "About This Macintosh..." dialog box is
system software, and the largest unused block is less than 2048K, you
need to reduce the amount of memory your system software uses. Your
Macintosh documentation contains details on optimizing memory use, but
some general suggestions follow:

 - Run only one application at a time. If other applications are
running, close them and re-launch Cinemania '95.

 - Reduce the amount of memory being used by your system software:

   1. Open the Memory Control Panel and check the Disk Cache setting.
To make the greatest amount of memory available, set the cache to
   32K.

   2. Large numbers of fonts and sounds consume system memory.
Removing those that you aren't using will make more memory
available. Be careful when moving fonts however, as some
applications (like Cinemania) may not work properly if the correct
fonts are not available. Remove only fonts you're certain other
   applications don't use.

   3. Third party system extensions such as screen savers, fax
software, desktop pictures, menu-modifying utilities and other
system enhancements increase the amount of memory your system uses.
Removing some or all of these extensions will increase the amount
of memory available to applications. Be sure that you save anything
you remove from your System folder in a separate folder on your
hard disk so that you can replace it later.

NOTE: Be sure to restart your Macintosh after making any of these
   changes to your system.

 - Turn on Virtual Memory

Virtual Memory allows you to increase the amount of available memory
by using space on your hard disk to simulate RAM memory. Although
using virtual memory will slow down performance slightly, the extra
available memory may make applications like Cinemania run more
effectively or allow more applications to be run simultaneously. To
turn on Virtual Memory, open the Memory control panel, click the
Virtual Memory On button, and then restart your computer. You may also
wish to investigate third-party virtual memory utilities, such as RAM
Doubler from Connectix Corporation.

If you have 8MB of memory
-------------------------

Typical system:
   Macintosh Quadra 610
   8MB of RAM
   13-inch monitor
   Thousands of colors

Cinemania is designed to work best with this memory configuration.
However, you may encounter memory problems if you have a large amount
of system software or want to run several applications at once. If you
have trouble running Cinemania, all of the solutions mentioned above
should help.

If you have more than 8MB of memory
-----------------------------------

Typical system:
   Macintosh Quadra 650
   16MB of RAM
   16-inch monitor
   Millions of colors

In this configuration, you may want to increase the amount of memory
made available to Cinemania.

 - Increase the size of the Disk Cache

Open the Memory Control Panel and check the Disk Cache setting. For a
system with more than 8MB of RAM, you should set the cache size to be
256K or 512K.

 - Increase the "Preferred Size" for Cinemania's memory allocation
The default "Preferred Size" of memory for Cinemania is 2560K.
Cinemania will run with this amount of memory, but you can improve
performance by setting aside more memory for the Cinemania
application. To do this, click the Cinemania '95 application icon,
then choose "Get Info" from the File menu. In the sections titled
"Memory Requirements," change the preferred size from 2560K to
   3072K or 3584K.

--------------
3. PERFORMANCE
--------------

If Cinemania '95 seems to be running slowly or interrupts sounds or
film clips, there are a number of things you can do that may help.
Here are the main things to check:

 - If you are using a Macintosh with low memory you may experience
performance problems, read the previous section, MEMORY USE.

 - If your Macintosh is using Virtual Memory, you may find that
Cinemania '95 runs slowly. For best performance, turn off Virtual
Memory. To do this, open the Memory control panel, click the
Virtual Memory Off button, and then restart your computer (or
disable any third-party virtual memory utility you may be using).

 - If you are using a slow CD-ROM drive, it may not be able to supply
information to the Macintosh at the speed required by Cinemania.
This problem cannot be fixed. If you suspect a problem with your CD
drive, ensure that it is properly terminated and that its software
is properly installed. For details on SCSI termination, see your
Macintosh or CD-ROM drive documentation, or contact your Apple
   dealer.

 - If you are using a Power Macintosh, the video clips in Cinemania
will run more smoothly if you have installed the QuickTime 2.0
PowerPlug extension. For details, see the section in this ReadMe on
   MANUAL INSTALLATION.

---------------------------------------
4. SCREEN SIZES AND COLOR CONFIGURATION
---------------------------------------

Cinemania '95 requires that your monitor be set to display 256 colors
or more. Cinemania '95 can run in 16-bit video (thousands of colors)
and 24-bit video (millions of colors). These video modes will improve
the appearance of Cinemania's film clips. However, they have no impact
on the appearance of other images, and, on some systems, using 24-bit
video may slow Cinemania's performance.

NOTE: Running in millions of colors, Cinemania may encounter problems.
See the section in this Read Me on KNOWN PROBLEMS.

On systems running fewer than 256 colors, you will either be prompted
to switch to 256 colors, or if your Macintosh doesn't support 256
colors, to quit the application.

Cinemania '95 is designed to be used on a 13-inch or larger monitor
(640x480 display area or larger). Cinemania is not designed to run on
monitors with smaller display areas, such as the Apple 12-inch
monitor, the Macintosh Color Classic, or some PowerBook screens.

-----------------
5. SOUND PROBLEMS
-----------------

If you do not hear any sound at all, first make sure that you have the
sound level on your Macintosh set correctly. To set the sound level,
use the Sound control panel and experiment with the speaker volume
setting until you get a comfortable sound level. If you set the sound
level to maximum, you may hear sound distortion.

If your Macintosh is using Virtual Memory, you may find that sounds
are interrupted. When Virtual Memory is turned on, sounds are
sometimes placed on the hard disk rather than in physical RAM. For
best performance, turn off Virtual Memory. To do this, open the Memory
control panel, click the Virtual Memory Off button, and then restart
your computer (or disable any third-party virtual memory utility you
may be using).

Some sounds used in Cinemania '95 are stored on the CD-ROM in a
compressed format. In order to be played, the sound must be read from
the disc and decompressed. Older or slower Macintoshes (such as the
Macintosh II and Macintosh LC) may experience interruptions in audio
playback.

NOTE: When playing sounds in low-memory situations or with Connectix
RAM Doubler, Cinemania may encounter problems. See the section in this
Read Me on KNOWN PROBLEMS.

----------------------
6. MANUAL INSTALLATION
----------------------

 - If you are running System 7.0 or 7.0.1 and don't have the extra
hard drive space needed to install, you'll need to manually install
Cinemania '95. (See Section 1 for details on Cinemania '95's system
   requirements.) To do this:

   1. Create a new folder on your hard drive labeled "Cinemania '95."

   2. On the Cinemania '95 CD-ROM disc, open the folder labeled
"Install Files." (You may need to scroll down or click the zoom box
in the title bar to see it.)

   3. Copy all the files from "Install Files" into the "Cinemania '95"
folder you just created on your hard disk.

   4. Open the "Cinemania '95" folder on your hard disk. Open the
"System Files" folder. Move all the files from that folder to
the System folder on your hard disk. You will be asked whether
you want to put the files in the appropriate places in the
   System Folder. Click OK.

   5. Restart your Macintosh before running Cinemania '95.

 - If you are running System 7.0 or 7.0.1 and are installing Cinemania
to a second drive, you'll need to manually install the fonts in your
active system folder. To do this:

   1. Run the Installer from the Cinemania '95 CD-ROM disc. Use the
Installer to set up the Cinemania application on your second drive.
When you're done, quit the Installer.

   2. On the Cinemania '95 CD-ROM disc, open the folder open the
folder labeled "Install files." (You may need to scroll down or
click the zoom box in the title bar to see it.) Open the "System
   Files" folder.

   3. Copy the Fonts folder to the active System folder on your hard
disk. You will be asked whether you want to put the files in the
appropriate places in the System Folder. Click OK.

   4. Restart your Macintosh before running Cinemania '95.

 - If you have a Power Macintosh and have not previously installed the
PowerPlug extension for QuickTime 2.0, installing the PowerPlug on
Power Macintoshes will improve Cinemania's performance. It will
have no effect on other Macintosh models. To install the PowerPlug:

   1. On the Cinemania '95 CD-ROM disc, open the folder labeled
"Install Files." (You may need to scroll down or click the zoom
box in the title bar to see it.) Open the "System Files" folder.

   2. Copy the QuickTime PowerPlug file to the System folder on your
hard disk. You will be asked whether you want to put the files in
the appropriate places in the System Folder. Click OK.

   3. Restart your Macintosh before running Cinemania '95.

-----------------
7. KNOWN PROBLEMS
-----------------

 - Running Cinemania '95 in millions of colors

Cinemania '95 is optimized for use in 256 or thousands of colors. When
running in millions of colors, particularly on a Power Macintosh using
the Modern Memory Manager, you may experience some display anomalies.
This problem can be corrected by increasing the "Preferred Size" for
Cinemania's memory allocation. To do this, click the Cinemania '95
application icon then choose "Get Info" from the File menu. In the
sections titled "Memory Requirements," change the preferred size from
2560K to 3584K.

 - Using multiple monitors with a main monitor displaying less than
   256 colors

If you have two monitors connected to your Macintosh and your main
monitor (the one with the menu bar) is set to display 16 colors, 4
colors, or black and white, you may experience display problems with
Cinemania '95. (This configuration is most common among PowerBook
owners who use a second monitor.)

To correct this problem, use the Monitors Control Panel to set the
monitor with the menu bar to 256 colors, or (if that's not possible)
you can minimize the problem by setting the monitor with the menu bar
to display 16 grays (rather than 16 colors). Alternatively, you can
correct the problem by setting up your Macintosh so the menu bar is
displayed on the second monitor:

   1. Open the Monitors Control Panel. You should see a diagram
indicating the relationship of your two monitors.

   2. In the diagram, use the mouse to drag the image of the menu bar
from your 16-color monitor to your second monitor. This tells
your Macintosh to place the menu bar on your second monitor.

   3. If necessary, restart your computer for the change to take
   effect.

 - Playing sounds with insufficient free RAM

In some situations, QuickTime 2.0 and Sound Manager 3.0 may have
insufficient free RAM available to play sounds. Apple's Multimedia
Tuner 2.0, included on the Cinemania '95 CD, should improve the
system's ability to play sounds under these conditions. However, if
you are still experiencing problems, try the following:

   1. To see how much free RAM is available, quit Cinemania '95,
return to the desktop, select the Apple menu at the top left of
the menu bar, and choose the first menu item, "About This
   Macintosh...."

   2. If the "Largest Unused Block" is greater than 2048K, you can
reduce Cinemania's preferred memory partition to provide more free
memory for the system to play sounds. To do this, click the
Cinemania '95 application icon then choose "Get Info" from the File
menu. In the section titled "Memory Requirements," reduce the
preferred size from 2560K to about 128K less than the largest
   unused block.

 - Playing sounds on a Power Macintosh with Connectix RAM Doubler
   installed

Versions 1.5.1 and earlier of Connectix RAM Doubler have a known bug
that prevents dialogues and music clips from playing properly on Power
Macintosh models. To obtain upgrade information, contact Connectix
Corporation at (800) 950-5880.

 - Exiting the Installer on some Performa models

Clicking the Restart button in the Installation Successful dialog box
on some Performa models will occasionally cause a system crash. This
is a known bug in the Apple Installer and it will not damage your
system. To restart your computer, use its power switch to turn it off,
wait 10 to 15 seconds, then restart your computer.
