The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Money 99
 - Microsoft Money 98
 - Microsoft Money version 5.0 for Windows 95
 - Microsoft Money versions 4.0, 4.0a for Windows 95
 - Microsoft Money versions 3.0, 3.0a

SYMPTOMS
========

When you download your statement from Wells Fargo Bank, duplicate
transactions are entered in your Checking account.

This occurs with Wells Fargo checks numbered higher than 999 which were
printed prior to November 1995.

CAUSE
=====

Before Wells Fargo became a Microsoft Money member bank, Wells Fargo
checks were micro-encoded with only the last three digits of the check
numbers. When these checks are downloaded to Microsoft Money, only the
last three digits of the check number are included. As a result, Money
cannot match the transaction in the account register.

Money uses the Number field to match transactions downloaded from the
bank with those you enter into the Account Register. Wells Fargo
checks numbered 000 to 999 download correctly. However, older checks
numbered 1000-9999 download as 000-999.

For Example, you write check number 2300 for $30.00 at your local
grocery store and enter it in your Account Register. When check 2300
clears the bank, it is downloaded to Money with a check number of 300.
When Money tries to match this transaction, it does not match the
transaction with the transaction numbered 2300, even though this has
the same amount and date as the downloaded transaction. Instead, a new
transaction for check number 300 is entered in the Account Register.
This results in duplicate entries.

RESOLUTION
==========

To continue using checks printed prior to November 1995, follow these
steps:

1. When you enter checks in the Account Register, only enter the last
   three digits in the Number field.

2. After the download is complete, and your transactions are matched,
   edit the transactions in the Account Register to indicate the
   complete check number.

You can also Contact Wells Fargo to order new checks if you are
experiencing this problem. Checks ordered after November 1995 have the
full check number micro-encoded and download correctly.
