The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Automap Road Atlas for Windows, version 4.0
 - Microsoft Automap Streets for Windows, version 4.0
 -------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you are running Road Atlas or Streets version 4.0, you receive one of
the following error messages:

   Inaccuracy of solution no solution

   -or-

   Inaccuracy of solution greater than 500 meters

These messages occur when you are using a Global Positioning System (GPS)
receiver.

STATUS
======

The error messages indicate the Geometric Dilution of Precision
(positional fix based on signal strength) is too great, or that not enough
satellites have been located to perform an accurate positional fix.

These error messages are not indicators of a problem with the GPS receiver
or software. The messages are simply reporting that the signals received
are inadequate for producing an accurate fix on your location.

RESOLUTION
==========

This is not a problem with the GPS application.

The solution for either of these problems is to relocate the GPS
receiver to a location better suited for of communicating with the
satellites.

For example, you may want to move away from the following:

 - Tall buildings.
 - Ravines.
 - Strong Radio Interference.

After you relocate the receiver, wait for a clearer signal.

MORE INFORMATION
================

The Geometric Dilution of Precision, explained in the introduction to
GPS documentation included in most GPS software, is a measurement of
how accurate the GPS receiver can determine its position based on the
signals received.

Tall buildings or steep terrain may cause reflections and echoes of
genuine GPS signals. These signals can cause the receiver to calculate
inaccurately. When this occurs, or if the GPS receiver cannot tune in
a sufficient number of satellites to calculate an accurate position,
the error messages can occur.
