--------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Macintosh, versions 3.0, 4.0
 - Microsoft ClipArt Gallery for Macintosh, version 1.1
 - Microsoft Organization Chart for Macintosh, version 1.0
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you attempt to start a program that uses the Shared Code Manager
(such as ClipArt Gallery, Microsoft Organization Chart, and so on) you may
receive a message similar to the following:

The shared code file <file name> could not be found. Would you
   like to look for it?

At this point two buttons are available: Cancel and Look. If you look for
the DLL and select it, the Shared Code Manager will work correctly for
that session. However, each subsequent time you attempt to load the
program, you are prompted again to find the DLL.

CAUSE
=====

The DLL file mentioned in the message may have become corrupted, or it has
been deleted or moved.

WORKAROUND
==========

To work around this problem, use the following troubleshooting steps:

1. Verify that the Shared Code folder is located in the Extensions
folder. The Shared Code Manager is an extension that loads the
dynamic-link library (DLL) files stored in the Shared Code Folder.
The Shared Code Manager looks for the Shared Code folder in the
   Extensions folder.

2. Check the contents of the Shared Code folder. The Shared Code
folder should contain the following items:

      Name Size
      --------------------------------

      OLE Client DLL 65,592 bytes
      OLE Reg DLL 13,447 bytes
      OLE Server DLL 26,934 bytes

3. Rebuild the Desktop. If the Desktop file is damaged, the Shared Code
Manager may not be able to locate the DLL files. To do this:

NOTE: If you are using System Software prior to 7.5 skip to step b.

   a. Disable all extensions and control panels except Macintosh Easy Open
in the Extensions Manager control panel.

   b. Restart the computer while holding down the OPTION and COMMAND keys.

This brings up a dialog box that asks you if you are sure you want
      to rebuild the desktop file.

   c. Click OK to perform the rebuild.

   d. Once the desktop has been rebuilt, open the Extensions Manager
control panel and restore your previous extension set.

4. Test for a corrupted Shared Code preferences file. Drag the Shared
Code preferences file from the Preferences Folder to the desktop.
Make sure that no programs are running at the time. Test the
program again. If this corrects the problem, throw away the
damaged Shared Code preferences file on your Desktop.

5. Remove the Shared Code Manager and the Shared Code folder and
   reinstall them. To do this:

   a. Drag the Shared Code Manager and the Shared Code Folder
to the desktop. If the extension is missing, go to Step 2.

   b. Run Microsoft Office Setup or Microsoft PowerPoint Setup from
Install Disk 1 or from your Office CD-ROM.

   c. Click Add/Remove when the Setup (Maintenance Mode) dialog box
      appears.

   e. Under Installed Components, click the option triangle for
Microsoft PowerPoint. With a stand-alone installation of PowerPoint,
select the check box to the left of PowerPoint then skip to step g.

   f. All options will be selected by default. Leave the Microsoft
PowerPoint option on the second level selected. Clear the
      remaining items.

   g. Under Installed Components, click the option triangle for Tools.

   h. Leave the Spelling option selected. Clear the remaining items.

   i. Click Continue to remove PowerPoint and Spelling. After the
      removal is complete, click OK.

   j. Drag the PowerPoint Settings (4) file from the Preferences folder
      to the Trash.

   k. Run Setup again and click Add/Remove.

   l. Under Components Not Yet Installed, click the option triangle for
Microsoft PowerPoint. With a stand-alone version of PowerPoint,
select the PowerPoint check box and then skip to step n.

   m. All listed options will be selected by default. Leave the Microsoft
PowerPoint option on the second level selected. Clear the remaining
      items.

   n. Under Components Not Yet Installed, click the option triangle for
      Tools.

   o. Leave the Spelling option selected. Clear the remaining items.

   p. Click Continue to add PowerPoint and Spelling.

This process will place new versions of the Shared Code Manager and
Shared Code folder in your Extensions folder.
