SYMPTOM
=======

When you try to change your preferred name in Bob, you may receive the
following message:

   Hmm, that name is taken.
   Please type a different preferred name
   so I won't get the two of you mixed up.

CAUSE
=====

You receive this message if you try to use another user's preferred name,
or if you try to use a preferred name previously removed from the home.

RESOLUTION
==========

To use a name that has been removed, you must clean up your files in Bob.

To clear information about previous users of a name, do the following:

1. Exit Bob and close any other open programs.

2. In the Windows Control Panel, double-click the Date/Time icon.

   a. In Windows 95, click Start and point to Settings.
   b. In Windows 3.x, from the Program Manager, open the Main group.

3. Advance the current date 7 months. Click OK.

4. Start Bob and sign in.

5. Exit Bob. You will receive the following message:

   I need to do some housekeeping. I need to clean up after someone
   who removed his or herself from the home a long time ago. This will
   free up some space on your computer. Shall I do it now ?

6. Click Clean It Up or wait momentarily and Bob will
   permanently remove the preferred name.

Note: It is important to exit Bob and follow step 7 below BEFORE you
make changes to any programs on your computer.

7. Exit Bob, reopen the Windows Control Panel, and reset the date to the
   current date.

You can now change your preferred name the next time you open Bob.
