----------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Works for the Macintosh, versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a,
   4.0b, and 4.0c
----------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you try to use the Print To File option in Works, you may experience
either of the following symptoms:

 - No Print To File option is available.

 - You save a file using the PostScript File option, and the file that
   is created contains several pages of unreadable code.

CAUSE
=====

Works does not have a Print To File option to save a file to disk. If a
PostScript printer is selected in the Chooser, there is an option to save
the file as a PostScript file. However, this option creates a file of
PostScript page description code for a printer; it does not create a text
file of the document that can be edited.

STATUS
======

This behavior is by design.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior
---------------------------

Non-PostScript Printer:

1. Open a word processing document.

2. On the File menu, click Print. Note that there is no Print To File
   option to save the file to a disk.

PostScript Printer:

1. Open a word processing document.

2. On the File menu, click Print.

3. Click PostScript File, click Save, and then type a name for the file.
   Note that on some printer drivers you may not have the option
   "Postscript File", but rather it may simply say "File".

4. Go to the File menu and select Open.

5. Select All Available from the File Format drop down menu.

6. Click the file that you created earlier, and then click Open.

7. Click OK when you receive the following message:

        There is no translator available to import the file "<filename>".
        Would you like to open it as a text file?

        where <filename> is the name of the file that you created

   NOTE: If you have Macintosh Easy Open installed on your computer, and
   it is turned On, you can simply double-click the file you created in
   step 3 from the Finder. Choose Works as the program to open the file.

The file opens in the word processor as several pages of PostScript code.
