The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Bob, versions 1.0, 1.0a
-------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY
=========

You won?t be able to start Bob email if your Bob E-Mail profile has been
altered, its password changed, or you changed your MAPI (Messaging API)
service program

SYMPTOMS
========

When you start Bob E-Mail, you receive this message:

   I couldn't find your e-mail information, which means I can't
open e-mail. This is pretty serious. Please call your
designated support provider for help. Look in your Bob Magazine
to see who your designated support provider is.

You cannot enter Bob E-Mail; however new users logging into Bob can
enter Bob E-Mail.

CAUSE
=====

This error occurs if:

 - Your Bob E-Mail profile has been deleted, or moved,
the password has changed, or an error occurs when you create the
   profile.

 - Your password has been changed using an e-mail program other than
Bob E-Mail (for example, Microsoft Exchange).

 - You changed your MAPI (Messaging API) service program. For example,
installing or removing Microsoft Exchange for Windows 95 causes this
error. Bob can work with Exchange, but once you enter your e-mail
information you cannot switch from Bob to another e-mail program.

RESOLUTION
==========

There are several ways to resolve this problem:

 - Remove and reinstall Bob. This is the simplest resolution, but you
will lose any customizations made to Bob since you first installed
   it.

 - If you have changed your e-mail password in a program other than
Bob, change the password to match the one used in Bob.

 - If you have installed Microsoft Exchange for Windows 95, create a
new Exchange e-mail profile, and assign your Bob name to it.

 - If you have uninstalled Exchange for Windows 95, reinstall
it. Create a new e-mail profile using Exchange and assign your Bob
   name to it.

 - If you are not using another e-mail program, log into Bob as a new
person, this creates a new e-mail profile, then assign your original
   name to this e-mail profile.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Steps to Remove and Reinstall Bob
---------------------------------
Run the Bob Setup program and choose the Remove All option, and then
reinstall Bob. Bob will start with no e-mail information, allowing you to
re-enter your e-mail information.

CAUTION: While this has the advantage of being quick and easy you
will lose all previous Bob customization information.

1. Run Bob Setup from the floppy disks.

2. Click the Remove All button to remove Bob.

3. Run Bob Setup again to reinstall.

For detailed instructions, refer to page 18 of the Bob Magazine, Premiere
Issue.

Creating a New Bob Profile When Running Windows 95 Without Exchange
-------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Log into Bob as a new user. Use Testmail, as the I Prefer To Be Called
name. Enter the Bob Home and a new e-mail profile will be created for
   the Testmail user.

2. Exit Bob.

3. Modify the file

      C:\Windows\Mapi\Profiles.ini

using Microsoft Notepad. Change the line

        Testmail=xxxxxxxx
   to
        <username>=xxxxxxxx

where <username> is the I Prefer To Be Called name, for the Bob
user locked out of the mailroom. This is the name used at the
Front Door of the Bob Home.

4. If there is already a line for <username>=xxxxx, disable it by
inserting a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line.

5. Save Profiles.ini.

6. If you are using a password in Bob, you must remove it because the
Testmail profile contains no password. You will receive the error
Couldn't Find Your E-mail Information, if your password is not removed.

NOTE: After resolving the e-mail problem, you can reset your password.

To remove your password do the following:

      a. Start Bob, and click the front door.

      b. Click Change Your Name Or Other Information.

      c. Click your name, then click Change Password.

      d. Type your password, then click OK.

      e. When prompted What Password Would You Like, leave the text box
         empty.

      f. Click OK, then click Keep It Blank.

7. Start Bob, log in as the original user, and start Bob E-Mail.
Bob E-Mail will appear with an empty mailbox.

Creating a New Profile When Running Windows 95 with Exchange
------------------------------------------------------------

1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.

2. Double click Mail And Fax.

3. Click the Show Profiles button.

4. Examine the profiles.

If your Bob I Prefer To Be Called name is listed, do the following:

   a. Double-click the profile name to show its properties.

   b. The two items in this profile should be Bob E-Mail Service
and one Personal Folder (.pst) file. Remove all other services
      from the profile.

If your Bob I Prefer To Be Called name is NOT listed, create a
new profile by doing the following:

   a. Click the Add button.

   b. Click Manually Configure Information Services and then Click Next.

   c. Type your Bob I Prefer To Be Called name in the Profile
Name box and then click Next.

   d. Click the Add button, then double-click Bob E-Mail Service.

   e. Click the Add button, then double-click Personal Folders.

   f. Type the name of a personal folder, and then click Open. The name you
      use is not important.

NOTE: If you previously used Bob E-Mail succesfully, and had
messages in the Bob E-Mail, it may be possible to locate the
original Personal Folder (.pst file). Instead of typing a new name,
      type

        \msbob\mailroom

in the name box and press ENTER. If any .pst files are listed, add ONE
name to the profile. If after starting Bob, you still cannot enter
the Bob E-Mail, change the name used for this profile by repeating the
     above steps.

NOTE: If you do use a pre-existing .pst file, it may have a password.
You will always get the error, Couldn't Find Your Email Information,
if your current Bob password does not match the .pst file password.
The solution to this problem is to change your Bob password to match
that used by the .pst file. If this password is unknown, you must use
     a new .pst file.

   g. Click OK to close properties.

   h. Click Next, then click Finish. Click Close.

5. Start Bob, log in as the original user and start Bob E-Mail.
Bob E-Mail should appear, with an empty mailbox.

To Find the Correct Bob I Prefer To Be Called Name
--------------------------------------------------

1. Log into Bob as the person who is locked out of the mailroom.

2. Click Other Options, then click Change Something.

3. Click Your Password and Info, then click Your Personal Information.

4. Note the I Prefer To Be Called name.

5. Exit Bob.

Advanced Troubleshooting
------------------------

To fix the e-mail information problem without removing all of Bob, do the
following:

1. Rename or delete the following files:

    - Msbob\Mailroom\Mailroom.ini
    - Msbob\Setup\Setup.stf
    - Msbob\Utopia.mdb
    - Windows\Mapi\Profiles.ini

For more information about how to perform this task in Windows, see
your Windows printed documentation or online Help.

CAUTION: When you delete or rename Utopia.mdb personal information
such as your password and Calendar data is deleted. This
information needs to be re-entered in Bob. In addition,
renaming or deleting the Profiles.ini file removes your previous
e-mail session settings for Bob and other e-mail programs.

2. Run Bob Setup again to reinstall a new version of Utopia.mdb.

3. Log into Bob using the same name and same password you used
before. This is important to maintain access to your mail messages.

4. Start Bob E-Mail and re-enter your e-mail information. This information
can be found in your Bob Welcome Kit.
