SUMMARY

This article explains how to download Cinemania or Music Central online
updates files using the America Online (AOL) Web browser, version 2.5.
 
Detailed instructions are listed at the end of this article, but here is
a basic summary of the steps involved:
 
 - Download the update file from the Internet, using the standard AOL
   method. Since AOL does not support long file names, it will give the
   downloaded file a different extension.
 
 - Copy the file to the Cinemania or Music Central folder.
 
 - Rename the file to the original filename, as shown on the Web
   page.
 
 - Start the multimedia program. The file will be automatically
   integrated.

To download the update files from AOL, do the following:
 
 1. Open AOL 2.5.
 
 2. At the AOL home screen, click Internet Connection.
 
 3. Click World Wide Web.
 
 4. Click the AOL Homepage.
 
 6. Type the Web address for the updates, and then press the ENTER
    key. The addresses are as follows:
 
    Cinemania                     http://www.msn.com/Cinemania
    Music Central                 http://www.musiccentral.msn.com/mcupdate
 
 7. When the Web page is loaded, follow the onscreen instructions to
    download the updates. These instructions may vary over time, so they
    are not included in this article. When you click to download the
    file, the following message appears:
 
       Would you like to use AOL download manager?
 
 8. Click No.
 
 9. You will receive the following message:
 
       You have selected a document with the content type of application/
       octet-stream. No helper application is defined for that type. Would
       you like to set up an application to present this type of document?
 
10. Click No. The file is saved to the AOL25\Download folder
    (directory) on your hard drive.
 
    NOTE: The files will have an incorrect file name extension (.cin), as
    AOL 2.5 does not support long file names.
 
11. Copy the file to the multimedia program folder. The folders are
    usually named:
 
    Cinemania         C:\Program Files\Microsoft Multimedia\Cinemania
    Music Central     C:\Program Files\Microsoft Multimedia\Music Central
 
    To copy the files, do the following:
 
    a. Click the Start button, point to Programs, and click Windows
       Explorer.
 
    b. Double-click the AOL25 folder, then double-click the Download
       folder.
 
    c. In the right pane of Explorer, find and click the downloaded Update
       file one time.
 
    d. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
 
    e. In the left Explorer pane, double-click the Program Files folder.
 
    f. Double-click the Microsoft Multimedia folder, then double-click
       the Cinemania or Music Central folder, as appropriate.
 
    g. On the Edit menu, click Paste. The is copied to the folder.
 
12. If you are using Windows 95, perform the following instructions to make
    sure you can see the file:
 
    a. On the View menu in Windows explorer, click Options.
 
    b. On the View tab, make sure there is not a check mark next to
       Hide MS-DOS File Extensions. If there is a check mark, click the
       box to remove it.
 
    c. Click OK.
 
13. Rename the files using their correct filename extensions:
 
       Cinemania                         <filename>.cin96upd
       Music Central                     <filename>.msc96upd
 
    To rename the files, do the following:
 
    a. In Windows Explorer, click the downloaded Update file one time.
 
    b. On the Edit menu, click Rename.
 
    c. Type the name again, using the correct filename extension.
 
    d. Press the ENTER key to finish the renaming process.
 
14. Start the multimedia program. This automatically integrates the file.
