 - Microsoft Works for the Macintosh, version 4.0b & Bookshelf '94
 - Microsoft Works & Bookshelf '95 for the Macintosh

SYMPTOMS
========

When you start Works 4.0 for the Power Macintosh, the program may quit or
freeze a few seconds after the Works Startup screen appears.

RESOLUTION
==========

Works 4.0 for the Power Macintosh needs Virtual Memory turned on to
function correctly.

To turn on Virtual Memory do the following:

1. On the Apple Menu, point to Control Panels and click Memory.

2. In the Memory Control Panel, select On, in the Virtual Memory section.

   NOTE: The amount given to Virtual Memory does not matter, as long as it
   is turned on. If the computer has sufficient RAM, the Virtual Memory
   setting may be as small as possible.

3. Close the Memory Control Panel and restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Turning Virtual Memory on is the preferred way of running your Power
Macintosh computer. Turning Virtual Memory off dramatically increases the
amount of memory required and in some cases can cause a conflict between
two components. One such conflict is between OpenTransport 1.1 and Works
4.0 for the Power Macintosh.

Open Transport 1.1 can be installed separately or as a part of System
7.5.3.

If RAM Doubler from Connectix is installed and activated, you do not need
to turn on the virtual memory setting.
