The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Macintosh, version 4.0
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY
=======

If your PowerPoint installation has become damaged, you may want to
remove and reinstall PowerPoint. If you don't completely remove
PowerPoint prior to reinstalling, in some cases the problems you are
trying to correct will not be eliminated. The following article explains
how to set up your computer to do a "clean" installation of PowerPoint.
A "clean" installation means that when you install the program, the Setup
program will install PowerPoint as if you are installing it for first
time. No preferences, extensions, or component files from PowerPoint will
be left on your computer.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Use the following steps to perform a "clean" installation of Microsoft
PowerPoint 4.0:

NOTE: Do not use this method if you installed Microsoft PowerPoint from
Microsoft Office. These steps apply only to the stand-alone version of
PowerPoint.

Remove PowerPoint
-----------------

Method 1: Run Setup and then Choose Remove All
----------------------------------------------

1. Double-click Microsoft PowerPoint Setup from your original product
disks or from the shared network location from which you originally
   installed PowerPoint.

If Setup fails to run in maintenance mode, see the "Troubleshooting"
section at the end of this article.

2. Click the Remove All button.

You may see a dialog box with the following message:

Are you sure you want to completely remove this application?

Click Continue to proceed with the removal.

3. Just prior to finishing the removal, you may see a dialog box with a
   message similar to the following:

During your installation, Setup replaced or attempted to remove one
or more files that were 'in use' and therefore couldn't be directly
      overwritten or deleted.

These files have been moved to the Trash, and can be inspected or
deleted at your convenience after the system restarts.

Click OK to continue. This message means that the Setup program is
   unable to remove itself.

You may see a message similar to the following:

Your installation of Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0 has been successfully
      removed.

Click OK to complete the removal.

4. Delete the PowerPoint folder and its contents. Make sure that no
PowerPoint Presentations or personal files are stored in that location.

5. Check the Custom Dictionary size.

      a. Open the Microsoft folder.

      b. Click the Custom Dictionary to select it.

      c. Click Get Info from the File menu.

      d. Look at the size field. If zero K on disk is listed, move on to
         step f.

      e. If the Custom Dictionary is greater than zero K, move the file
from the Microsoft folder to a different location on your hard
disk. After reinstalling PowerPoint, restore the Custom
         Dictionary to the Microsoft folder.

6. Delete the Microsoft folder and its contents. If you have other
Microsoft applications on your system, you may have some of the
following files within your Microsoft folder:

      Microsoft Movie
      Voice Annotation

Do not delete these programs, PowerPoint does not install them. Move
them to a different folder location and then restore them to the
   Microsoft Folder after re-installing PowerPoint.

NOTE: Microsoft Movie and Voice Annotation are OLE applications. After
restoring them to the Microsoft folder, double-click the program icons
   to reregister these programs.

7. Remove the remaining files that the Setup program may leave behind.
Take a look at Method 2 for a list of files to remove.

Method 2: Drag PowerPoint and its Support Files to the Trash
------------------------------------------------------------

1. Delete the folder where PowerPoint 4.0 is installed. Make sure
that no PowerPoint Presentations or work files are stored there.

2. Remove the following files:

   From the Extensions Folder:

      Apple Event Manager
      Genigraphics
      Microsoft Dialog Library
      Microsoft Find File Library
      Microsoft Mail Library
      Microsoft OLE Extension
      Microsoft OLE Library
      MTExt
      Shared Code (folder)
         Ole Client Dll
         OLE Reg Dll
         OLE Server Dll
      Shared Code Manager
      Shared Library Manager (Ver. 1.1.2)

NOTE: Never delete the Shared Library Manager if the version is 2.0.or
greater. To determine the version select the Shared Library Manager,
and click Get Info on the File menu. Shared Library Manager 2.x is an
integral part of the Open Transport network software.

   From the Preferences Folder:

      artgalry.idx
      artgalry.ini
      artgalry.thm
      Cue Card Settings
      Embedding Preferences
      Equation Editor Preferences
      Microsoft Find File (folder)
      Microsoft Graph Settings (5)
      Microsoft Help Preferences
      MSOrgChart Clipboard
      MSOrgChart Preferences
      PowerPoint Settings (4)
      PPC Registration Database
      Registration Database
      Shared Code Preferences

NOTE: The artgalry.* files are normally not found within the
Preferences folder. However, in some cases they may be generated there.

   From the Fonts Folder:

      Arial Narrow
      Book Antiqua
      Bookman Old Style
      Century Gothic
      Century Schoolbook
      Monotype Corsiva
      Monotype Sorts
      MT Extra
      Wingdings

Run Disk First Aid
------------------

Run the Disk First Aid utility to scan the disk drive to which you are
installing PowerPoint. The following steps apply to version 7.2 of Disk
First Aid. The process may vary slightly depending on which version of Disk
First Aid you are using.

1. Start your Macintosh using the Disk Tools disk or the Apple Macintosh
compact disc. (You can start you Macintosh directly from the Disk Tools
disk or the Apple Macintosh compact disc--that is, there is a System
Folder located on the disk that your Macintosh can use.)

If you run Disk First Aid without starting from the Disk Tools disk or
your Apple Macintosh compact disc, Disk First Aid will not allow you to
   repair any problems.

Start Up From the Compact Disc:

   a. Insert your Apple Macintosh compact disc.

   b. On the Special menu, click Restart.

   c. Hold down the following key combination:

         OPTION+COMMAND+SHIFT+DELETE

This key combination tells your computer to ignore SCSI ID 0 and
look for a startup device at the next SCSI location. Normally, your
compact disc device is found next at SCSI ID 3.

NOTE: On some systems, you can start your computer from the compact
disc by holding down the C key.

   d. Release the keys when the "Happy Macintosh" icon appears. If you
continue to hold the keys down, your hard disk drive will not mount
      and you must restart.

Start Up From the Disk Tools Disk:

   a. On the Special menu, click Restart.

   b. Place the Disk Tools disk in the floppy disk drive. If the disk
is ejected prior to restarting, push the disk back into the drive.

2. Make sure you have booted from the floppy disk or compact disc. Drag the
compact disc or floppy disk icon to the Trash. If the disk or disc is
ejected, the floppy or compact disc was not your active system software.
Repeat the process until your active system is the System Folder located
on the floppy or CD-ROM disk.

3. Start Disk First Aid. Disk First Aid is found in the Utilities folder
within your Apple Macintosh CD. If you are starting from Disk Tools,
Disk First is normally found on the root level of the disk.

4. Click the volume you would like to repair. Multiple volumes can be
selected by holding down the SHIFT key.

5. Click the Repair button. Make sure that file sharing is turned off.
If file sharing is enabled, you may not be able to repair the volume.

6. When Disk First Aid is finished repairing, click Quit on the File
   menu.

Rebuild the Desktop
-------------------

If you are running System 7.5.x, use the following steps to perform a clean

2. To turn off all extensions, open the Sets pop-up menu again, and
   choose All Off.

3. Select the Macintosh Easy Open check box (make sure that there is a
check mark in the check box).

4. Restart the computer while holding down the OPTION and COMMAND keys.

This should bring up a dialog box with a message similar to the
   following:

Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop file on the
disk <name of your hard drive>?

Release the keys and click OK.

5. When the desktop is rebuilt, click the Apple menu, and click Control
   Panels.

6. Open the Extensions Manager control panel.

7. Turn your extensions back on, click the Sets menu, and click the name
you gave your set of extensions in step 1 (for example, 'My
   Extensions').

8. Restart your computer to activate your extension set.

If you are running an older version of System 7, follow step 4.

Reinstall PowerPoint
--------------------

1. Start the computer with extensions disabled. To do this, restart the
computer while holding down the SHIFT key. You should see the following
   message:

      Welcome to Macintosh.
      Extensions Off.

Repeat step 1 until you see the Extensions Off message.

NOTE: If you are installing from a network, you will need to enable your

your name. Click OK when you are ready to continue.

   c. Confirm Name and Organization information. Click OK when ready to
      continue.

Your product identification number will be displayed.

After PowerPoint is installed, you can access this identification
number by clicking the About command on the Apple Menu.

   d. Click OK when ready to continue.

   e. Select a destination folder for PowerPoint. Click the Setup
button after specifying the desired location for PowerPoint.

   f. Choose the type of installation. The following three choices are
available: Typical, Complete/Custom, or Minimum. To make a
selection, click the icon to the left of the installation
      description.

TIP: Before you continue, verify that the Install Folder location is
correct. To modify this location, click the Change folder button.

   g. Select the version of PowerPoint you want to install. The three
options are: PowerPoint for Power Macintosh, PowerPoint for
Macintosh, and PowerPoint for Macintosh and Power Macintosh. The
recommend selection for your computer should be the default. To
change the default, click the button to the left of the desired
option, and then click OK to continue.

NOTE: If you are installing the 680x0 only version of PowerPoint you
      will not see this screen.

   h. If you chose Complete/Custom next you should see an options list. By
default, all options are selected. To remove an option, clear the
      box next to the item.

NOTE: You will not see the options list if you selected a Typical or
      Minimum installation.

   i. To automatically update your graphs, click the Yes button. (When you
click this button, graphs in your documents will be updated
      automatically to Microsoft Graph 5.0.)

   j. Select the dictionary you would like to install. Click the
button to the left of the desired dictionary. Click OK.

Setup will then verify if adequate disk space exists. If adequate
disk space is available, Setup will start copying files to your hard
      drive.

5. After Setup is complete, click Restart.

Troubleshooting
---------------

If Setup fails to start maintenance mode, one of the following conditions
may be true:

 - You are running Setup from a set of disks different from the set used
to originally install the product. Obtain the original disks and run
   Setup again.

 - Your desktop file is damaged and the Setup program cannot find the
Microsoft PowerPoint Setup and Microsoft PowerPoint Setup Data files.
Go to the "Rebuild the Desktop" section of this article and follow the
steps to rebuild your desktop file.

 - Your Microsoft PowerPoint Setup and Microsoft PowerPoint Setup Data
files have been moved or deleted from the Setup folder. If the
Microsoft PowerPoint Setup and Microsoft PowerPoint Setup Data files
are missing, maintenance mode will not function. If this happened to
your computer, you will need to remove all the PowerPoint files by
hand. For steps to do this see "Method 2: Drag PowerPoint and its
support files to the trash" in the "Remove PowerPoint" section of this
   article.
