SUMMARY
=======

Because of physical read limitations of some CD-ROM drives, some files and
folders on the Microsoft Bookshelf '96-'97 compact disc may be inaccessible
from your CD-ROM drive. This article lists those files and explains how to
test your CD-ROM drive.

MORE INFORMATION
================

The CD-ROM drive may have difficulty reading certain files on the compact
disc. These files are:

   Files Location on Disc
   ----- ----------------

   Installer Script 614 MB
   Books\ZIPCODE\Zip.idx 599 MB
   Books\MM\Yircomp.dib 534 MB

NOTE: The Bookshelf compact disc contains 614 MB of data. The final
file on the disc is Installer Script.

The CD-ROM drive may have difficulty reading files located on the outer
portion, or track, of the disc. To test for specific drive capacity
limitations, try to copy these files from the compact disc to the hard
disk. If they cannot be successfully copied, your CD-ROM drive cannot read
the CD at that location. If they do copy successfully, compare the file
sizes of the file on the compact disc and the copied file to make sure the
file was copied correctly.

Copying Files from the Bookshelf Compact Disc to the Hard Drive
---------------------------------------------------------------

1. Insert the Bookshelf '96-'97 disc into the CD-ROM drive.

2. Open the Bookshelf '96-'97 disc.

3. Drag the Installer Script file to your hard drive icon.

If the file copies successfully, proceed to step 4. If you get an error
message, skip to step 9.

4. Open the Books Folder on the compact disc.

5. Open the ZIPCODE Folder.

6. Drag the Zip.idx file to your hard drive icon.

If the file copies successfully, proceed to step 7. If you get an error
message, skip to step 9.

7. Close the ZIPCODE Folder and open the MM Folder on the compact disc.

8. Drag the Yircomp.dib file to your hard drive icon.

9. If the following error message appears while you copy any of the
files, then your CD-ROM drive cannot read the disc at the specified
   location:

The file <file name> couldn't be read, because a disk error
occurred. Do you want to continue copying?

Where <file name> is the name of the file you are copying.

Comparing File Size Information
-------------------------------

If the files do copy successfully, you should compare their sizes with the
size of the corresponding file on the compact disc. For each file that you
successfully copied from the compact disc to the hard disk, do the
following:

1. Locate the file on the compact disc. For example, locate Installer
   Script on the compact disc.

2. Click the file one time.

3. On the File Menu, click Get Info.

4. On the line displaying the Size, make note of the number of bytes
   used.

5. Repeat steps 1-4 with the corresponding file that you copied to the
hard drive. In this example, you would repeat steps 1-4 for the
Installer Script file that you had copied to the hard drive. The file
sizes should be identical. If the number of bytes is different, then
the CD-ROM drive is having problems reading the disc.
