IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT MICROSOFT ARCADE
********************************************
Welcome to Microsoft Arcade!

Here's some information to help you install Arcade on your computer,
as well as troubleshooting tips for sound and video display.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
BEFORE SETUP: Hard Drive Space
To install Microsoft Arcade, you must have at least 3 megabytes (MB)
of free space on your computer's hard drive.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
SETUP: How to Install Arcade on Your Hard Drive
Installation is easy. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Insert Disk 1 - Setup in the disk drive.
Double-click the Arcade Setup icon.
From this point on, the Arcade Setup program guides the way
and keeps you posted on the progress of the installation.

Sit back and relax as Setup decompresses and transfers the Arcade
files to your computer's hard drive.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
BEGINNING TO PLAY: Just Point and Click!
You can play any of the Arcade games -- just double-click the Arcade
folder, and then double-click the icon of the game you want to play.
Arcade shows a short demo of the game. To start game play, choose
New Game from the File menu or press COMMAND-N.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
LEARNING TO PLAY: Quick Help and Help
When you start a game for the first time, Arcade displays Quick Help
to provide basic instructions on how to play.

For a more complete guide to the games, including strategies, hints,
scoring information, and historical anecdotes, choose Help from the
Options menu.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
CUSTOMIZING THE GAMES: Create Your Personal Versions
To change the keyboard and mouse controls that you use to play
each game, choose Player Controls from the Options menu. To
customize playing speed and other game variables and create
your own personalized versions of the games, choose Customize
Game from the Options menu.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
SOUND: Troubleshooting Tips
Microsoft Arcade captures the original sounds of these classic games
and includes Macintosh Sound Manager version 3 to enhance your
playing experience.

If you encounter problems hearing game sounds, make sure that
you have installed version 3 of Sound Manager on your Macintosh.
Double-click the System folder, and then double-click the Extensions
folder. Click Sound Manager, and then choose Get Info from the File
menu to verify that you are running version 3. If you have an earlier
version, drag it to the Trash and re-install Arcade. This will copy
version 3 of Sound Manager to your Macintosh.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR MACINTOSH AV OWNERS: You may experience sound
distortion with some Macintosh AV models, particularly when playing
Battlezone. The high-fidelity reproduction of the AV sound system
tends to exaggerate problems in the original classic sounds.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
COLOR MODES: Troubleshooting Tips
You can play Arcade using either 16 or 256 color modes. Arcade
will NOT run in Thousands or Millions color modes. To change
your color mode, double-click Monitors in your Control Panels
and choose either 16 or 256 colors. You can usually find the
Control Panels on the Apple menu. If you don't see Control Panels
on the Apple menu, double-click the System folder, double-click
the Control Panels folder, and then double-click Monitors.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
GAME PERFORMANCE: How to Get the Best Mouse Performance
Most of the Arcade games work well no matter what settings you
use for the mouse. You may find that Tempest plays better when
you speed up mouse tracking. In the Control Panels folder, choose
Mouse, and then change Mouse Tracking to the fastest setting.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
PLAYING ARCADE ON POWERBOOKS: Turning Off the Power Save Features
Some PowerBook models have a feature called Processor Cycling. This
feature cycles the speed of the processor down and then off after a
period of inactivity. You may wish to turn this feature off during
Arcade game play.

To turn off Processor Cycling in System 7.01, double-click the
Portable control panel. Hold down the OPTION key and click
"Minutes until automatic sleep", and then click "Don't Rest".

To turn off Processor Cycling in System 7.1, double-click the
PowerBook control panel. Hold down the OPTION key and click the
Options button, and then click "Don't allow cycling" under Processor
Cycling.

When you quit Arcade, be sure to turn the Processor Cycling feature
back on.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
32-BIT ADDRESSING: Troubleshooting Tips
Arcade will not run properly on some Macintosh models if 32-bit
addressing is NOT turned on. If you have problems running Arcade
on your computer, you will want to make sure that 32-bit
addressing is on. Normally, your computer will be setup with this
option turned on and this should not cause any problems.

To check if 32-bit addressing is on, double-click the Memory control
panel. The option under '32-Bit Addressing' should be turned on.
If it is not on, select 'on', close the Memory control panel, and
restart your computer. You will need to restart before the changes
to 32-bit addressing will take effect.
