PRB: Blank Application Icons After Installing FoxBASE+/Mac

SYMPTOMS

If icons for FoxBASE+/Mac that are supposed to appear as application icons (that is, a piece of paper with a hand on it) are instead blank after installation, the Anti-Virus program may have been running during setup or the desktop file may be corrupt.

RESOLUTION

Before reinstalling FoxBASE+/Mac, rebuild the desktop and disable all Extensions or INITs (including the Anti-Virus program):

  • To rebuild the desktop file, hold down the OPTION and COMMAND keys while restarting the Macintosh. When the alert box that says "Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop file on the disk "Hard Disk Name"? Comments will be lost." appears, release the keys, and click the OK button. Once the desktop is rebuilt, FoxBASE+/Mac should load when a file is double-clicked in the Finder.

    NOTE: When the desktop is rebuilt, any customized information in the Get Info dialog box is lost for every file on the hard disk.

  • To disable all Extensions or INITs: 

        - Under System 7.0, press the SHIFT key while restarting the
      machine to disable all Extensions. Once the logo "Welcome to
      Macintosh/Extensions Off" appears, release the SHIFT key.


        - Under System 6.0x, drag each INIT out of the System Folder and
      restart the Macintosh.

    NOTE: You may not be able to remove all the Extensions or INITs; some may be needed to run the Macintosh. Remove as many INITs or Extensions as possible.
