SYMPTOMS
When you print to an Apple LaserWriter in Helvetica, Helvetica Narrow,
or New Century Schoolbook, the bullet character and Japanese Yen
symbol may print in place of one another. If the Bullet symbol
(OPTION+8) is inserted, the Bullet character appears on the screen,
but a Yen character is printed. If the Yen symbol (OPTION+Y) is
inserted, the Yen character appears on the screen, but a bullet is
printed.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because certain versions of the bitmapped (screen)
font have these glyphs reversed.
NOTE: Glyph is the term for the description of the character of a
font.
WORKAROUND
When you print or display a particular glyph, Font Manager refers
directly to the character that the glyph represents. Font Manager
accesses an individual character by finding a character code (a
hexadecimal number from $00 through $FF) in a lookup table. Font
Manager then displays the glyph corresponding to that character code
in the font of the currently selected font family.
The glyph for the bullet and the yen have been interchanged in the
lookup table for the three TrueType fonts listed above.
