The information in this article applies to:

• Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 2.x, 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a
• Microsoft Excel for OS/2, version 2.2, 3.0
• Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 2.x, 3.0, 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Print Titles feature in Microsoft Excel, the resulting printout may show the print titles for the columns printed twice on the first page of the worksheet.

In the case where the print titles are located lower down on the first page, they may print at the top of the page as well. If the print titles are at the top of the page, they may be printed twice in a row.

CAUSE

The print titles are being printed the first time because they are the print titles; they are printed the second time because they are part of the defaulted print area.

The following is an explanation of this behavior for various versions of Microsoft Excel.

Version 4.0

Print Titles Printed Twice:

Page 534 of the "User's Guide 1," version 4.0, states:

   The print titles will first print in the range in which they appear
   on the worksheet. They will print at the top of each subsequent
   page.

• Print_Titles are defined as rows other than the first row or rows, and the Print_Area is defined to include the rows contained in the Print_Titles. (Similar to behavior in Microsoft Excel 2.x, 3.0.)

In Microsoft Excel, version 4.0, the print titles will NOT be printed twice on the first page in either of the following situations:

• Print_Titles are defined (no matter which rows), but no Print_Area is defined.

  -or-

• Print_Titles are defined as the first row or rows, and any Print_Area is defined. (Similar to behavior in Microsoft Excel 3.0.)

Version 3.0

Print Titles Printed Twice:

In Microsoft Excel, version 3.0, the print titles will be printed twice on the first page in either of the following situations:

• Print_Titles are defined (no matter which rows), but no Print_Area is defined. (Similar to behavior in Microsoft Excel 2.x.)

  -or-

• Print_Titles are defined as rows other than the first row or rows, and the Print_Area is defined to include the rows contained in the Print_Titles. (Similar to behavior in Microsoft Excel 2.x, 4.0.)

In Microsoft Excel, version 3.0, the print titles will NOT be printed twice on the first page in the following situation:

• Print_Titles are defined as the first row or rows, and any Print_Area is defined. (Similar to behavior in Microsoft Excel 4.0.)

Versions 2.x

Print Titles Printed Twice:

In Microsoft Excel, versions 2.x, the print titles will be printed twice on the first page in either of the following situations:

• Print_Titles are defined (no matter which rows), but no Print_Area is defined. (Similar to behavior in Microsoft Excel 3.0.)

  -or-

• Print_Titles are defined (no matter which rows), and the Print_Area is defined to include the rows contained in the Print_Titles.

In Microsoft Excel, versions 2.x, the print titles will NOT be printed twice on the first page in this situation:

• Print_Titles are defined as the first row or rows, and the Print_Area is defined to exclude the rows contained in the Print_Titles.

WORKAROUNDS

Workaround for Print Titles NOT in the First Row or Rows

Version 4.0:

Follow the methods provided for versions 2.x and 3.0 below, or do the following:

1. Select the entire worksheet by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR (in Windows), or COMMAND+A (on the Macintosh).

2. Remove the print area by choosing Remove Print Area from the Options menu.

3. Print the worksheet.

1. Print the entire worksheet, except for page one, by choosing Print from the File menu and specifying Pages Starting From 2.

2. Select the entire worksheet by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR (in OS/2 or Windows), or COMMAND+A (on the Macintosh).

3. Remove the Print Titles by choosing Remove Print Titles from the Options menu.

4. Set a new print area for the first page only, or select Print from the File menu and specify Pages From 1 To 1.

5. Print the first page.

Workaround for Print Titles Defined as First Row or Rows

Version 3.0:

Follow the method provided for version 2.x below, or do the following:

1. Set a print area by choosing Set Print Area from the Options menu. The print area you select may contain the rows of your print titles.

2. Print the worksheet.

1. Select everything you want printed, except what you have set as the print titles.

2. Set the print area by choosing Set Print Area from the Options menu.

3. Print the entire worksheet.
