Paintbrush May Not Save Pasted 256-Color Images Correctly

SYMPTOMS

If you paste a 256-color image, such as a scanned image, into Windows NT Paintbrush from the Clipboard, Paintbrush may not save the image correctly to disk.

The image appears correctly in Paintbrush, but when you save the image and reopen it, it may appear as if it were translated into a 16-color image or it may appear solid black.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1 and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Use a 256-color bitmap as your wallpaper and press Print Screen to copy the image into the Clipboard.
  2. Open Paintbrush and choose Zoom Out from the View menu. Then, select Paste from the Edit menu twice to paste the image into Paintbrush.
  3. From the View menu, choose Zoom In. From the File menu, choose Save and save the image as TEST.BMP.
  4. Close and then reopen Paintbrush.
  5. From the File menu, choose Open and open TEST.BMP.
The resulting image may have been saved in 16-color format or it may be completely black.

This problem occurs only with 256-color images that are copied to the Clipboard and then pasted into Paintbrush.
