Excel: Graphic Object Duplicated in Print Titles

SYMPTOMS

A graphic object located above but close to a horizontal page break may be partially or wholly duplicated in the print titles on the following page.

CAUSE

This problem will occur if you are printing without gridlines and if your print titles are set to one or more rows.

WORKAROUNDS

To print your document correctly, do one of the following:

  • Move the graphic object up on the page so that no part of it falls in the last row before the page break.

    -or-

  • Remove your print titles by choosing Define Name from the Formula menu, selecting Print_Titles, and choosing the Delete button.

    -or-

  • Enable the Gridlines option in the Page Setup dialog box (from the File menu, choose Page Setup).

    NOTE: If you use this last workaround, you can keep your gridlines from printing by formatting them with the color white. To do this: choose Display from the Options menu, select White in the Gridline & Heading Color list, and choose OK. Note that any borders that were applied with the color "automatic" will turn to white. Also, since a white border will appear around the entire sheet when printed, any black or other color borders that you have applied to cells on the edges of the page may be covered partially or entirely by the white border.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Excel listed above. This problem does not occur in later versions.
