SYMPTOMS

If you try to establish the initial connection between a Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.1 (WFW) workstation and a Windows NT workstation using Chat, where the WFW machine is the initiator of Chat, and the CHAT$ share requires a password from the WFW machine, and no password is entered, the following error will occur:
NETDDE caused a General Protection Fault in module USER.EXE.
This error will occur whether or not the user account on the Windows NT workstation has a blank password.

CAUSE

The cause of this problem has not yet been determined.

RESOLUTION

When using Chat from a WFW machine to a Windows NT machine, always enter the appropriate password when prompted. Also, do not create user accounts with blank passwords on the Windows NT machine if you plan on using the account to connect with Chat from a WFW machine.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT operating system version 3.1 and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
