File Fails to Launch or Gives Error on 68040 Macs

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft File for the Macintosh, versions 2.0 and 2.0a

SYMPTOMS

File fails to launch or hangs (stops responding) frequently on a 68040-based Macintosh. 68040-based Macintoshes currently include all Centrises and Quadras.

CAUSES

There are three possible causes for the problem:

  • The Macintosh is set for 32-bit addressing in the Memory Control Panel.

    -or-

  • The processor cache is enabled in the Cache Switch Control Panel.

    -or-

  • File and the Macintosh are incompatible. File will not work on some Macintoshes, regardless of any software settings. Microsoft and Apple are aware of this problem on the Centris 610 and Quadra 660 or 800. Microsoft will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

The following steps may correct the problem on 68040 Macs not mentioned in cause 3 above:

  1. From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels and open the Memory Control Panel.

  2. If the option is available, turn 32-Bit Addressing off. If the option is not available, File will not run correctly on this Macintosh. Close the Memory Control Panel.

  3. Open the Cache Switch Control Panel. If the Control Panel is not available, you can install it by dragging it from Apple's TidBITS disk into the Control Panels folder in the System Folder.

  4. Set the 040 Processor Cache to "More Compatible (Caches Disabled)." Close the Cache Switch Control Panel.

  5. Restart the Macintosh and try to use File.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft has no plans to update File to enhance its compatibility. Previous versions of Microsoft File are incompatible with all 68040-based Macintoshes.
