SUMMARY

For Word 6.0 for Windows to use the universal naming convention (UNC), Setup must be launched using UNC. If the workstation is set up using UNC, the resulting Word icon and .INI entries will reflect UNC paths and thus will not require the server share to be connected before running Word.

If workstation Setup is run from a specific drive letter (for example, the normal procedure of connecting to a server and double-clicking SETUP.EXE), the icon's command line and .INI entries will reflect that specific path, including the drive letter. For example, if the server were on drive Z, the icon's command line would read z:\winword\winword.exe. For Word to start, the server share must be connected to drive Z.

With UNC setup, the icon command line would be \\apps\winword\winword.exe, and thus no pre-existing connection is required to start Word.

To Set Up a Workstation to Use UNC

Make sure there is a valid server installation of Word.

From the workstation, choose Run from Program Manager's File menu.

On the command line, type the UNC path to SETUP.EXE. For example,

```

Choose Workstation for the installation type and proceed with Setup as usual.
