SYMPTOMS
When you work with a split-window document in outline view, Word for
Windows may turn off Show First Line Only mode. This happens in the
inactive pane if you switch the active pane to normal view. However,
if you switch to the outline view pane, Word switches back to Show
First Line Only mode. In other words, Show First Line Only mode is
turned off when the pane is inactive, but it is turned on as soon as
you reactivate the pane.

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Show First Line Only mode displays only the first line of each body
paragraph. In Word 6.0, you can switch to Show First Line Only mode
by choosing the Show First Line Only button on the Outline toolbar.
In Word 2.x, do the following to switch to Show first Line Only mode:
