SUMMARY

Word for Windows shares its text converters with Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, Microsoft Publisher for Windows, and Microsoft Works for Windows by placing them in a shared location. This common location is the MSAPPS\TEXTCONV subdirectory of the Windows program directory (for example, C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS\TEXTCONV, where C:\WINDOWS is your Windows program directory).

PowerPoint, Publisher, and Works all place their text converters in the TEXTCONV subdirectory and thus share their text converters with one another and Word as well.

MORE INFORMATION

The Word Setup program checks the version of every installed text converter in the TEXTCONV subdirectory before installing one of its own. If the Word text converter version is newer than the existing text converter version, Word replaces the older file with its newer file (this happens even if the text converter was originally installed by PowerPoint, Publisher, or Works).
