SUMMARY

Microsoft Word (version 6.0) and WordPerfect (versions 5.1 for MS-DOS and 5.1 and 5.2 for Windows) support advance formatting to horizontally and/or vertically position text on a page. Word 6.0 maps all advance codes to equivalent formatting in conversion to and from WordPerfect. The following table lists the advance codes available in each product and how they are mapped during conversion:

Advance formatting is not a feature of earlier versions of Word. Therefore, text positioned in WordPerfect using advance codes appears at its original position when opened into earlier versions of Word.

Word and WordPerfect include both relative and absolute vertical and horizontal advance formats. Word specifies position in point units and WordPerfect specifies position in inches.

All advance formats have equivalent starting locations in each product with the exception of the absolute horizontal advance format. WordPerfect's Advance to Position format is measured from the left edge of the page whereas Word's equivalent format {ADVANCE \x} is measured from the left edge of the column or frame. Word makes any adjustment in starting position measure necessary to retain document appearance.

Text cannot be effectively (visually) advanced either relatively or absolutely beyond the right column or frame margin in either a single or multi-column layout in either product.

If text is advanced to the left of the left edge of page in Word, it will disappear beyond the page edge as expected. However, if text is positioned similarly in WordPerfect, the text will appear emanating to the right from the left edge of page.

In both products, if you attempt to advance text to the right of the right margin of the column or frame (box), the text will simply appear beginning at the left margin of the following line.

WordPerfect allows text to be advanced down across page breaks but does not allow text to be advanced up across a page break. If you attempt to do so, the text will instead appear beginning at the top margin of the origin page. Word does not allow text to be advanced up or down across page breaks.
