How Newspaper Columns Convert Between WordPerfect and Word |

Basic newspaper-style columns in which text flows from the bottom of one
column to the top of the next are conceptually the same in WordPerfect 5.1
for MS-DOS, WordPerfect 5.1 and 5.2 for Windows, and Microsoft Word 6.0 for
Windows, and are retained in conversion to and from WordPerfect. Column
widths and space between measurements are also retained.
WordPerfect supports a maximum of 24 parallel columns, and this limit is
fully accommodated in conversion to Word 6.0 for Windows and vice versa.
Previous versions of Word do not support uneven (variable-width) newspaper-
style columns, and uneven WordPerfect newspaper columns therefore revert to
equal column widths in previous versions of Word.
One exception is that WordPerfect versions 5.x have no concept of balanced newspaper columns. Therefore, when a Word 6.0 document containing newspaper columns balanced with continuous section breaks is saved in WordPerfect format, text does not appear balanced as in the original document. Instead, text flows to the bottom of the page in a single column prior to breaking to the next column.
To avoid this WordPerfect limitation, replace continuous section breaks at
the ends of columns with column breaks prior to conversion or simply use
tables to achieve the same document appearance in Word. This process could
be automated with a search/replace/save-as macro.
