SYMPTOM

The Word 6.0 for Windows converter that allows Word 2.0 for Windows to read files created by Word 6.0 will not run under Windows 3.0.

CAUSE

This limitation exists because Word 6.0 uses object linking and embedding (OLE) 2.0 for file storage. Therefore, several OLE 2.0 files are required for the converter to read Word 6.0 files. These OLE files are not guaranteed to work under Windows 3.0.

This does not represent a problem with Word, the Word 6.0 Converter, or OLE 2.0. OLE 2.0 was released after the release of Windows 3.1, and Windows 3.1 is its minimum operating system requirement.

WORKAROUND

If you are running Word 2.0 under Windows 3.0 and you received a document from another user in Word 6.0 format, you must have this document reopened in Word 6.0 and resaved in Word 2.0 format before you can open in on your machine.
