XL5: Linked Control Does Not Work If Linked Cell Is Locked

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows version 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0

When you link a control to a worksheet cell, and you plan to protect the worksheet, the linked cell must be unlocked for the control to work.

To unlock a cell linked to a control:

  1. On an unprotected worksheet, select the cell linked to the control. (If the worksheet is protected, choose Protection from the Tools menu, and then choose Unprotect Sheet.)

  2. From the Format menu, choose Cells.

  3. Select the Protection tab.

  4. Clear the Locked check box.

  5. Choose the OK button.

The cell remains unlocked when you protect the worksheet, and the control linked to the cell works properly.
