SYMPTOMS

Windows 3.1 Help Compiler versions 3.10.504 and earlier will not function correctly with Word 6.0 for Windows or Word 6.0 for the Macintosh rich-text format (RTF) output. You may receive a general protection (GP) fault during help file compilation or the help file may be compiled using only the Windows system font.

CAUSE

Microsoft has identified this as a problem in the way previous versions of the Windows 3.1 Help Compiler interpret new RTF controls relating to font header information that Word 6.0 generates when saving as RTF.

WORKAROUND

An updated version of the Windows 3.1 Help Compiler (HC.EXE and HCP.EXE version 3.10.505) that addresses this problem is now available in the file Hc505.exe. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center. Click the file name below to download the file:

Microsoft used the most current virus detection software available on the date of posting to scan this file for viruses. Once posted, the file is housed on secure servers that prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

HC.EXE and HCP.EXE version 3.10.505 also correct the following problems:

More entries (approximately 8,000) in the map section and the alias sections in the .HPJ file are allowed.

A larger number of bitmap definitions (approximately 2,970) are allowed in an RTF input file.
