Case-Sensitivity Issues - Windows NT and UNIX/PC-NFS

SYMPTOMS

You may experience problems with File Manager and NFS between a system running Windows NT and a UNIX box or a computer running PC-NFS.

CAUSE

UNIX and PC-NFS are case-sensitive. The path changes to uppercase in the Windows NT Path box after deleting the drive letter, by design. However, the uppercase letters are not the same to the UNIX system.

RESOLUTION

To avoid having this problem, do not use the Path list box in the Connect Network Drive dialog box; instead, retype the path in the Path box with proper case (uppercase/lowercase).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. From File Manager, select the icon to connect to a network disk.
  2. In the Path box, type the path to a UNIX box or the PC-NFS box in lowercase.
  3. When you choose the OK button, a connection is made to the destination that you typed in the Path box.
  4. Disconnect from the network drive, and then try to reconnect by selecting the destination in the Path box.
The entry you made in lowercase has been converted to uppercase. This causes the new connection to fail. This happens no matter which options you select during the initial connection.
