SYMPTOMS

When you save a Word 6.0 document originally based on the AWARD.WIZ, CALENDAR.WIZ, or PLEADING.WIZ template wizard in Word 2.0 for Windows or any other foreign file format, some or all of the content of the documents is lost.

Specifically, documents based on AWARD.WIZ and CALNDAR.WIZ appear essentially empty when opened in Word 2.0, and documents based on PLEADING.WIZ lose attorney address information and line numbering.

CAUSE

Each of these wizards make extensive or even exclusive use of Word 6.0's new drawing object functionality to attain their unique appearances.

Drawing objects are not a feature of Word 2.0 or other foreign file formats to which Word 6.0 supports conversion. Therefore, all elements of a Word 6.0 document created as drawing objects will be lost when saving as Word 2.0 and other foreign formats. This applies the wizards referenced above and to any other Word 6.0 document containing drawing objects.

WORKAROUND

Possible methods of transforming drawing object information in Word 6.0 to forms that can be retained when saving to foreign formats include the following:

If a drawing object consists solely of a picture image or of text and picture information, you can select the drawing object, cut the object to the Windows Clipboard, and Paste Special as a picture prior to conversion.

If a drawing object consists solely of formatted text, you can select the text (without selecting the drawing object border), cut the text to the Windows Clipboard, select the drawing object border, press DELETE, choose Yes to delete the selected block, and then choose Paste Special and past the contents of the Windows Clipboard back into your document as formatted RTF text.

Understand that the positioning of surrounding document elements may be affected if you transform the contents of the drawing object to a picture or formatted text. Therefore, this may necessitate additional document layout adjustment prior to conversion.

If transforming the contents of a drawing object to a picture or formatted text is not feasible in a particular case, you will need to reconstruct the desired appearance in your document prior to or following conversion using other formatting means.
