Performing an Administrative Setup of Works 3.0

1. Run Setup from the same copy of the shared version of Windows the users will be using, and make sure that Setup has write access to the shared Windows directory. You must run Setup from a different computer than the one on which the administrative copy of Works will be placed.
2. Close any applications in Windows before starting.
3. Give write privileges to the Windows directory. See the network documentation for more information about allowing write access to the Windows directory.
   
   NOTE: Users should not access Windows while you are installing Works.
4. If you are using Windows 3.x, choose Run from the Program Manager File menu. If you are using Windows 95, on the Start menu, click Run.
5. Type the following in the Command Line box

   <drive letter>:\setup /a

   where <drive letter> indicates the drive in which the first Works 3.0 for Windows disk was placed. The /a parameter indicates a network administrator's installation of Works.
6. Setup displays the following message:
   
   Welcome to Microsoft Works 3.0 installation program. Setup cannot install system files or update shared files if they are in use. Before proceeding, we recommend that you close any applications you may be running.
   
   For information on closing applications without exiting Setup, choose Help.
7. Close any applications that are still running.
8. Setup displays the following message (see Steps 1 and 2 above):
   
   Please note the following before continuing with a shared network installation:
   
   Be sure Setup is using the same copy of shared Windows the end users will be using and that it has write access to the shared Windows directory.
   
   No users should have access to the system during the network installation.
9. Provide the Company Name and User Name. Also, note the serial number.
10. Indicate the directory into which Works will be installed. The main Works for Windows files will all be installed in one directory on the network.
11. The next screen states:
    
    Some files that may be installed with Microsoft Works 3.0, such as the Spell Checker files, may be shared by more than one application or computer, and should be installed to their own network directory.
    
    If a directory other than the directory displayed should be used for these shared files, please select the Change Directory button to specify the proper network directory.
12. The shared files (for example, Spelling Checker, Draw, Converters) are installed in a shared directory on the same directory level as the directory that contains MSWORKS.EXE. For example, if Works is installed in N:\MSWORKS, then the shared files will be installed in N:\MSAPPS.
    
    NOTE: For Windows 3.x users, if the network does not support Windows Redirection (that is, No Network Installed is set in Windows Setup for Network) the Workstation will not be prompted for the location of the shared MSAPPS even if the administrator selects User's Choice. Setup will always put the shared MSAPPS in the Workstation's Windows directory. Novell Lite is one example of a network that fits into this category.
13. Continue with Setup as usual.

Installing Works on a Workstation

1. Make sure that Works is installed on the server, that the network connection to the server is functioning, and that the drive on which Works was installed is available.
2. Start Windows.
3. In Windows 3.x, run Program Manager, and choose Run from the File menu.
   
   In Windows 95, click the Start button, and then click Run.
4. Type the drive and the complete path name of the directory where Works is installed on the server, followed by \setup.
   
   For example, type n:\msworks\setup if N is the drive for the server and MSWORKS is the server directory where Works is installed.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup. To install Works as a shared application, choose Workstation Installation. To install Works as a personal application, choose Complete Installation, Custom Installation, or Minimum Installation.
   
   NOTE: If Windows is shared, you may encounter a "Write error" if Windows is not properly installed in the shared network directory or if you do not have write privileges in the user directory.
6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 for each workstation on which Works is being installed.
