XL: Can't Access Name Box with Key Commands

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel versions 5.x and 7.0, to access the name box, you must use a mouse or other pointing device (such as a trackball). You cannot access the name box with key combinations.

MORE INFORMATION

The name box allows you to define names and select named ranges without having to use the Define Name or Go To dialog boxes. The name box is located in the formula bar.

To define a name without using the name box, you must use the Define Name dialog box. To do this using only a keyboard:

  • Press CTRL+F3 to display the Define Name dialog box.

  1. Press ALT+I to access the Insert menu.

  2. Press N to access the Name submenu.

  3. Press D to display the Define Name dialog box.

To go to a named range without using the name box, you must use the Go To dialog box. To do this using only a keyboard:

  1. Press F5 or CTRL+G to display the Go To dialog box.

  1. Press ALT+E to access the Edit menu.

  2. Press G to display the Go To dialog box.
